Dole expands salad recall, now including California, due to listeria risk

Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. is adding more products to its voluntary recall of packaged salads linked to a listeria outbreak, including some packages that were distributed in California, KTLA sister station WJW reported.

Dole issued a recall in December after two people died and 16 people were infected with listeria linked to its salads.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people as well as others with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection can also cause pregnant women to have miscarriages and stillbirths.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. About 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year, and about 260 die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The expanded recall includes all Dole-branded and private label packaged salads containing iceberg lettuce that was processed at its Springfield, Ohio, and Soledad, California, production facilities.

Recalled salad items from the Soledad facility were distributed in the states of AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, LA, MI, MN, MO, MS, MD, ND, NE, NV, NY, OK, OR, PA, TX, UT, VA, WA and WI.

Recalled salad items from the Springfield facility were distributed in the states of AL, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA and WI.

Equipment used to harvest iceberg lettuce tested positive for listeria, according to Dole.

No illnesses have been reported with the new recall, but people who have any of the products are urged to throw them out immediately.

The recalled products were sold in more than two dozen states and have a “Best if Used By” date between Dec. 22, 2021, and Jan. 9, 2022.

The last time this happened, my local grocery store stopped carrying Dole, and went with Fresh Express. I’m not impressed with them as when I have purchased their American mix, which is supposed to have iceberg and romaine lettuce, carrots, red lettuce, and radishes. Plenty of carrots, but very little red cabbage, and you’re lucky if you get two radishes. One package I bought had no radishes at all. I wrote the company about it, provided the package info, and they sent me some coupons, but their packages are still skimpy on those veggies.

I’ve had bagged salads before and there is something in them that makes the salad smell weird and taste odd.

True, but I live alone, and don't have the need for a bag of radishes. And I live in an apartment with no access to ground to grow anything in. People forget that not everyone owns a home.

This is a regular occurrence for bagged salads. I would not recommend buying them.
