They have been celebrated as classics of English literature for more than 150 years, enjoyed by generations of children as young as eight.
But university students have now been given a 'trigger warning' that Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Charles Dickens's Great Expectations both contain passages they might find 'distressing'.
Critics last night described the cautions given to students at Salford University as 'absurd'. Tory MP Andrew Bridgen said it was ridiculous that adults 'have to be protected from the stories that generations of children have been able to cope with without being damaged'.

We are told to be afraid and avoid anything that make provoke us to think.

To save time, every last thing should come with this warning: “This item might be distressing to the self-absorbed and emotionally fragile.”
Oh, wait. That was a bit harsh. Perhaps that warning should come with its own warning. I’m going to have to think about this for a bit.
These films will need ratings now.
In the 1970’s I am sure a movie had to be awfully dirty to get an R rating. Today Jane Eyre will need a PG.
The pendulum swings.
Likewise, Herman Hesse novels should be cautioned as depression and/or suicide-inducing....
But no warning on Rules for Radicals?
If you really want to make a Libtard distressed and “triggered” make them read the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
Guaranteed to put an industrial strength knot in their panties.
What’s truly distressing is society is playing along with these widdle whinies instead of admitting they’re mentally ill.
Yet, each one of those emotionally fragile babies get on twitter and lash out going for the jugular.
I want to make them all watch A Clockwork Orange and Blazing Saddles.
Real life Scanners...
And by the way, gay means light-hearted.
I’m surprised the trigger wasn’t the mixed race crazy wife in the attic...
Distressing? They should have to read,”The Jungle”
by Upton Sinclair! The most depressing thing I’ve ever read.
It gets worse and worse for the characters and then
ends as a plea for socialism.
If it had an axe in the bundle it would be a fascine.
Like the ones on the wall of the Congress.
There’s a lot of literature I read as a kid that was “distressing”.
I survived.
The snowflakes hate their fathers and hate their mothers.
That is the problem. Never seen gate in the culture like this in my lifetime.

I read a lot of literature ended up with a literature degree, then teaching lit. I was Jane Eyre as an adult. Brontë’s portrayals are tear jerkers. Just great. Many pertinent themes, layering, virtue vs evil. All applicable to contemporary life decision making. The purpose of literature. Which is why it’s still around.
Last week my cousins and sisters talked me into watching an episode of Yellowstone. I knew it would be raunchy but thought let’s
See what these girls are filling their leftist heads with
If anyone wants to talk about distressing but not talking about contemporary Mimi series, they are full of soup.
It took me three days to drop the distress
Yellowstone is dynasty (which I’ve seen one episode of) with porn and explicit violence and murder. The acting is so stiff it’s like a progressive commercial. The story line is absent and the themes are completely non existent. It is a waste of any amount of time spent viewing, including ads for it.
That these people are not targeting this is telling.
When my kids were young I did not put any garbage in my head and didn’t have it on in the house for them to overhear or come across.
This kind of crap separates kids from parents. That’s a bigger problem.
Jane Eyre is a treasure. That’s all
“ The snowflakes hate their fathers and hate their mothers.
That is the problem. Never seen gate in the culture like this in my lifetime.”
You don’t think it’s the other way around?
