Has anyone else been experiencing a pet food shortage? I see the shelves at pet stores and pet supply stores have empty spaces, especially for kitten food. I used to be able to find Purina ProPlan kitten food with no problem, but lately I can only find a couple of flavors--of course, the ones my kitten is not particularly fond of. I also tried Chewy and Amazon, and their selection of PPP kitten food also consists of only a couple of flavors. Let's go Brandon!
I haven’t noticed any shortages. We feed 1 dog and the cat Science Diet. The other dog is on a special diet to prevent bladder stones. She will NOT eat any of the varieties or brands, so I now make her food. She loves it, and scarfs it down. She absolutely lives to eat, so I’m glad I can make her something she enjoys, and it’s way cheaper, too.
We do buy fancy feast wet food to supplement the Science Diet dry cat food. I can always find it at Dollar General.
There are tons of new brands always coming out. Haven't had time to evaluate or read up on them. But Wellness, Solid Gold, and Earthborn are 3 favorite brands as to quality. They are grain free, have high quality sources of protein, have all the vitamins cats require, and my cats like them. You know, ground up pig snouts or beef lungs are technically protein, but they're low quality proteins. Cheap foods use stuff like that instead of muscle meats to make up their protein percentages. You get what you pay for.
I used to feed the neighbors cat poultry giblets when I cooked up a whole chicken or turkey. Cooked, of course.
She loved them.
There ought to be a way of making your own cat food and saving the cans for emergencies, but continue to buy them to stock up.
My PetSmart stores don’t have their house brand anymore. Some of their house brand canned wet stuff used to say made in USA..I wonder about all of the other brands. Maybe there is a shortage cuz of 1)Brandon the dull 2) cat food manufactured in other countries 3) packaging shortage 4) shipping problems.
We’ve had few problems here in Chicagoland, but there is a smaller selection than usual.
I think they’re conditioning us to get used to the side effects of Communism.
I’m going to start with the squirrels first.
What recipe do you use for your canine with bladder stones? When I can’t get the prescription food for mine, I make a stew of chicken, carrots, peas, rice and gravy. Hills adjusts the pH and things, so I only make hers when I can’t get the script stuff.
I just did some research. I thought Tuna was low in taurine, but I was wrong.
For when we can’t find cat food and have to make our own:

yes there is a shortage due to the supply chain
It’s been going on for a long time now. They can’t get the aluminum for the cans.
My cats are learning to eat kibble we order from a local pet food company.
Someone that works for Publix said it’s the containers that are the shortage issues not the food itself.
Sorry to hear about your kitty.
Costco often has no canned dog food available of any Brand. Our mutt only likes the Costco Natures Domain Turkey Stew. It has been a constant battle to track it down since 2020. At one point we had to post on our towns Facebook page and fortunately found someone that had 15 cans which their dog didn’t care for.
Our most recent purchase was from online outfit called Home Deliveries They seemed a bit sketchy but I found a few reviews where they appeared like they were a legitimate business. Fortunately the order went through It’s businesses model is marking up Costco products for resale. We were fine paying $11 more than the Costco in store price for a case of the dog food.
Thanks for the info. I believe in investing in good food. Vets always seem to sell/recommend Science Diet. Just was not sure that’s the best option.
China has to go back to eating rice?.
I also use the Science Diet dry food. My cat loves it.
Do they have it online?
Luckily I was able to get a pretty good supply for my kitty. But the shelves are fairly bare.
