NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Two-time champion Alysa Liu withdrew from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships after testing positive for COVID-19 on Friday, less than a day after a third-place finish in the short program put her in position to make the Olympic team.
The 16-year-old Liu is at least the fifth competitor to test positive for the virus in the run-up and during nationals, and the third that was expected to make the team for the Beijing Games. The pairs tandem of Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier dropped out the day before the start of competition when he returned a positive test.
Just like Knierim and Frazier, who plan to petition for one of the two pairs spots on the Olympic team, Liu has informed U.S. Figure Skating she will petition for one of the three women's spots based on her body of recent work.
"I'm fully vaccinated, have been wearing a n95 mask and got 2 negative test results before leaving to Nashville," Liu posted on her Instagram account shortly after withdrawing. "Things happen unfortunately."

Yeah, but if she had just gotten the vaccine in the first place.
Do you take vitamins to keep healthy in addition to washing your hands?
Agree on all your points. I only wear masks if they are mandatory to participate, such as in doctor’s office. Washing hands after touching anything others have touched is more effective in preventing covid infection.
Virus will get in system if you touch nose or mouth or eyes with contaminated hands. But luckily the skin on palm of hands is too tough for virus to penetrate.
I take minimum amount of vitamins, because they upset my stomach. But I over-eat fruits and veggies and yogurt. Mangoes are a favorite, and loaded with vitamin A. Oranges are good for vitamin C. I grew up drinking water-buffalo milk in India, and that milk was high in all nutrients needed, and those animals ate mostly hay all day.
I should not end this note without pushing importance of daily exercise. I am doing 20 minutes fast walk on treadmill with wrist weights followed by 30 pulls on weight machine set at 30 lbs. This daily routine has done wonders for me to stay healthy. No covid, no colds, no flu, no cough, no joint pains, and can mow my lawn on all 4 sides of house in Florida summers with a battery push mower. Love that mower, no fumes, no pull starts, lot less noisy, and lighter than gas powered mower.
Whether you want extra protection against infection is then a personal health choice.
Is she even sick?
RE: can somebody explain once again the benefits of vaxxing and masking
The only justification left is that being vaccinated prevents your illness from becoming serious, thus preventing hospitalizations and death.
In other words, being vaccinated stops your symptoms from getting worse if you should be infected.
The other “selling point”, for want of a better phrase, is the CHANCES of being infected are still markedly lower than not being vaccinated.
This is the claim and I hope it is true. It is not possible to prove a negative. There should still be a cost/ benefit analysis done for each person or group, such as healthy 5 to 12 year olds.
Nice thanks. I’ve recently become a big fan of breathing exercises to relieve stress. Amazing how taking a few minutes to breathe deep can reduce the heart rate.
That has been the ONLY function of vaccines since Adam & Eve. Vaccines can not stop virus material floating in with breath, and can not stop if you touch eyes, nose or mouth with virus contaminated hands. It is just physically impossible for any vaccine to build a mechanical barrier in respiratory system to filter out all incoming virus material.
Only function of ALL vaccines is to create immunity for the particular virus for example creating anti-bodies specific to the particular virus. So virus will come in, infect you, you could test positive. But if vaccine was successful in creating additional anti-bodies, your CHANCES of keeping virus from growing out of control are significantly better.
Keep in mind some people with existing immunity issues may not create sufficient anti-bodies.
Do you really believe that?
I believe in all those physics courses and all those fluid dynamics courses I took during 6 years to acquire masters degree in mechanical engineering.
Do this simple experiment. Turn on your kitchen faucet at about half flow rate, to simulate fluids exuded during a cough. Observe rate of water flowing out.
Now place tightly just a thin handkerchief on the mouth of faucet. Observe the rate of water flowing out. You will notice even a thin material obstruction reduces water flow significantly.
So if an infected person wearing mask coughs or sneezes or talks loud, the amount of virus material exuded will be less than without a mask. Reduced virus material exuded = less virus material for others to breathe in.
Things Happen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Now shut up and take your jab. /s
What a waste. They should put her on the team. Those that haven’t gotten Omicron likely will before or at the Olympics.
Natural immunity from omicron means these competitors are bulletproof
Unlike swimming and track/field, she can still be named to the team.
Still clueless, huh? You brought it with you - in those shots...
Feel free to stay masked to your heart's content. I'm not wearing one myself.
So stupid. I had it last week. Two days of fever and then two days of mild sniffles/coughs. That was it. No reason for an athlete like her to miss the Olympics. My heart breaks for her.
They should move the Olympics- not cancel them- but they won’t.
I trained all my adolescent life into my early 20’s for the Olympics (decathlon). I still remember my outrage when impotent jimmy carter boycotted the Moscow games. Its different now from when i trained in 1980’s when you barely received free sneakers without issues. Athlete can now turn “professional” in track and field and get paid.
Regardless- Olympic athletes train in obscurity for years- i can attest to that. Cancelling the Olympics is just punishing them.
Obviously you are not an educated mechanical engineer. But that is no problem. I am sure you did some useful work in your life.
