Park Superintendent Cam Sholly first raised concerns last September about wolves dying near the park border
Twenty of Yellowstone National Park's renowned gray wolves roamed from the park and were shot by hunters in recent months — the most killed by hunting in a single season since the predators were reintroduced to the region more than 25 years ago, according to park officials.
Fifteen wolves were shot after roaming across the park's northern border into Montana, according to figures released to The Associated Press. Five more died in Idaho and Wyoming.
Park officials said in a statement to AP that the deaths mark “a significant setback for the species’ long-term viability and for wolf research." One pack — the Phantom Lake Pack — is now considered “eliminated” after most or all of its members were killed over a two-month span beginning in October, according to the park.

What a shame./s
Looks to me like Wyoming and Idaho need to pick it up some.
Between sips of whiskey.
Question, do you live in wolf country?
They taste kind of like Bald Eagle.
“charismatic fauna like wolves.”
Say what??!!
Wolves are NOT charismatic unless one believes animals are as displayed by Disney or in the Ice Age movies.
Wolves kill whatever they can kill to eat. That could be your livestock, your pets and yes YOU are on the menu.
Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs meaning they can take down a bull elk and a full grown bison.
Being pack hunters they can destroy a herd of cattle in short order.
First they take the calves.
Every female calf killed is a decade of income down the drain because they never grow to replace themselves 10 times.
Every male calf killed is a steer that won’t make it to market (your table).
They also kill adult cattle which are kept for breeding purposes because they are THE BEST IN THE HERD. That decreases the QUALITY of the meat that does make it to your table.
Simple economics dictated the elimination of the wolf in the US.
The wolves now in the US are the much larger and more vicious CANADIAN wolf.
Open borders don’t even work for wolves.
Yellowstone is a big place but it does have limits. When the wolf packs grow past a certain point wolves will leave the park. Expand their territory if you will.
The problem is that outside the park are a bunch of people and their animals.
These wolves are accustomed to people and do not fear them.
That means that they will not avoid humans but will actively seek them out as a source of food.
That makes them very dangerous wolves.
They stay in the park they live.
They leave then they have to die.
I watched the pilot program for Michael Landon’s Little House on the Prairie a number of years ago. First it had none of the look and feel of the show the whole country came to love. That aside, it showed Pa Ingalls and family trying to settle down in a lean two in a new place for their first night. Bottom line, a large pack of wolves surrounded them. It was quite graphic and actually scary. Hollywood did good on that one. It is well worth watching if anyone can find it.
Re: 29 - best post of the thread.
The same FReepers who applaud extirpating wolves, an apex predator, may be some of the same whiners that wonder why deer, elk, etc look in such rough condition as natural predators are removed and species that they preyed upon have a greater probability of irruptive population cycles.
Wolves aren’t “happy” at killing. Wolves kill for a variety of reasons. Happiness is not one of them.
Stop applying human emotions and behaviors to wolves, and using that as some sort of justification for largely exterminating them in the past.
What incredible ignorance.
You obviously are neither a hunter, rancher, live in a rural or mountain community, have never been surrounded by a pack of wolves, don’t know the history of our nation, or a combination thereof. You want to reintroduce wolves into the wild than they are fair game. They are ruining our Elk herds and costing ranchers lots of money. A few more lives will lo be lost for this romantic adventure. Turn the wild places back a few centuries and if you do that the only people that survived the wild were the hunters, ranchers, and mountain men. City orphans that do not have a clue are cannon fodder for the wilderness. The wolves just put the teeth back into nature and nature has its own unforgiving laws because nature kills without any judgment or remorse, it just kills any romantic fool that ventures out into the sea or wild places unprepared. A pack of coyotes can be just as dangerous to people alone, but they mostly will still avoid most people. Wolves do not and a pack will take down anyone out there alone. So my family and friends will take any wolves that stray onto our property or go after our livelihood. Government fools will not control the wolf population but the hunter and rancher will. Shut up about it if you live in a concrete jungle.
You are ignorant and wrong. None of the wolves reintroduced into North America are pure wolf DNA. They are a canine infused Frankenstein reincarnation mix breed and are not a darwinian purity. Wild domestic dog breeds that run in packs kill for sport. There are countless scientific studies, video taped evidence, and proven fact that these new wolf packs much the same kill for blood lust and sport and not just for food.
That is. not even the biggest example and they can be much larger. Imagine about 8 or 10 chasing you down like that poor lady jogger in Alaska recently. The way to properly control the wolf population is through hunting and every single state with wolves understands this and allows it. Wolves need to learn to avoid man and domestic animals and maybe after a few centuries that bad canine DNA traits will kill off wolves that need to be eradicated.
If some enterprising ranchers were to trap some of these wolves and release them into park facilities in the big liberal cities, e.g. Rock Creek Park in Washington, Central Park in New York, Griffith Park in Los Angeles, and Lincoln Park in Chicago, there would be some poetic justice. Let the big city, elite liberals a taste of what they have imposed on rural and flyover areas.
You have no respect for private property or welfare of anything except those predator animals. Don’t be so absurd. God’s country? GOVERNMENT put those predators; they meddled with nature and did nothing to protect the neighboring environment. Government can protect them on its own property. They get off that then they are fair game.
Portland is the worst failed city and pretty soon if the wolf population rises high enough in Idaho they will come down the Columbia River George and when they reach Portland can feast on the nightly Antifa rioters.
“Wolves aren’t “happy” at killing. “
How do you know they are not happy? You some kind of wolf shrink?
