Hunters Kill 20 Yellowstone Wolves That Roamed Out of Park

Park Superintendent Cam Sholly first raised concerns last September about wolves dying near the park border

Twenty of Yellowstone National Park's renowned gray wolves roamed from the park and were shot by hunters in recent months — the most killed by hunting in a single season since the predators were reintroduced to the region more than 25 years ago, according to park officials.

Fifteen wolves were shot after roaming across the park's northern border into Montana, according to figures released to The Associated Press. Five more died in Idaho and Wyoming.

Park officials said in a statement to AP that the deaths mark “a significant setback for the species’ long-term viability and for wolf research." One pack — the Phantom Lake Pack — is now considered “eliminated” after most or all of its members were killed over a two-month span beginning in October, according to the park.

Better yet, send TX hog hunters with their black rifles to the border.

These wolves aren’t the native species.

They’re an imported, voracious, invasive species. About half again (or more) bigger than the original native wolf.

charismatic fauna like wolves

Wolves are not like Disney portrays them. They are cold blooded killers that would happily kill you just for fun gut eat you alive first if they were actually were hungry. There is a very good reason that they were largely exterminated.

“I’ve been a hunter all my life”

As have I, and dead wolves are really good wolves.

Have you a problem when ranchers turn donkeys out with their cattle and the donkeys kill the wolves?

Up in the UP of Michigan the cattle farmers are turning donkeys out with the cattle.

Donkeys will kill a wolf in a flash.

I’m all for letting the Dandy introduce all the invasive Canadian Wolves he wants into in his own neighborhood. Then he will have the right to talk about what others do in their neighborhoods - maybe, but walk the walk first Dandy. You can’t be a NIMBY on this. You show us how to do it when you commune with these charismatic puppies while they eat your neighbors kid.

For the life of me I can’t understand...

Well sorry you're fkn stupid then, and don't understand nature and the relationship between man - particularly farmers - and apex predators.

If you're ignorant and "can't understand" something then why not just STFU and learn?

They are no longer endangered.

Gray wolves are no longer an endangered species in the continental United States, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today, likely setting off a flurry of lawsuits by wolf advocates who believe the decision is premature.

When the agency began the process to remove the species from the Endangered Species List in March 2019, they said that the gray wolf population—which stands at around 6,000 animals in the lower 48—is “stable and healthy throughout its current range.”

“After more than 45 years as a listed species, the gray wolf has exceeded all conservation goals for recovery," David Bernhardt, secretary of the Department of the Interior, said in a Thursday news release. "Today’s announcement simply reflects the determination that this species is neither a threatened nor endangered species based on the specific factors Congress has laid out in the law."

For the life of me I can’t understand the appeal of hunting and killing charismatic fauna like wolves. Deer, elk etc, sure, provided you actually eat them, many Americans’ primary source of meat. A farmer or rancher could understandably have to kill wolves on occasion for livestock protection, although I don’t by any means endorse the idea that ranchers have a right to exterminate any wildlife that’s a threat to their business. Setting out to kill wolves for sport for its own sake is perverse.

To begin with, calling any wildlife "charismatic" is problematic. Do you base this characterization on years of Disney movies and cartoons? Wolves are simply another part of the natural environment. They aren't special. They are but one part of an ecosystem. Wolves, like many wild animals eat their prey alive. Is it charismatic to eat a suffering deer or elk young while they're still alive? The wolves are expanding their range beyond where the government wanted them. Weird how government unforeseen consequences works. I get that some folks look at some animals like wolves and whales in some kind of special way. They aren't.

Bears have killed more humans than wolves over the years.

We’re not out exterminating bears.

As apex predators wolves are a very important part of the ecosystem.

This is nothing out of “sport”. In AK, moose calf crops in some areas hover @ 10% as a consequence of excessive wolf and bear populations. Wolves are down and out killing machines.

Wolf and man is an age old war Predator and Prey in this case both sides are the same. People now days watch to many Disney movies as kids and think wild animals are all cute little stuff animals they can play with and cuddle. To a wolf your are nothing more that a potential meal and you will never be more than that.
