He and Rod Steiger together in “In the Heat of the Night” was just awesome.

One of my favorite actors. His performances in "Lilies of the Field" and "To Sir, With Love" were both remarkable and inspiring.
RIP, Homer Smith.

I was just talking on the phone with a friend, and he mentioned a movie filmed in our area starring Sidney Poitier. Then I pulled up FR and found he had died.

Yeah, I remember being forced to watch “lilies of the field,” which demonstrates perfectly that Roman Catholic nuns are a bunch of clueless ninnies. I actually had to watch it twice.

He was an advocate of equality, as well he should have been.
But he eschewed discussions of equity, long before issues of reparations rose their ugly heads.
He once told an interviewer that if he did not know the difference, he should look it up.
I had a lot of respect for him for that.
Although I think a few "woke" blacks and whites put him down for it.
(The interviewer was that guy that smoked like a tar truck...had a late, late night show. For the life of me, I cannot remember his name.)

May he rest in peace. He was only 94! Think what he could have accomplished if only he had been given more time.

I saw all the 60s socially enlightening films Poitier was in, but I was 12 and really didn’t have a clenched fist to raise at point in life, and never really developed the habit.
Shoot to Kill, was chocobloc full of action, Drama, and thrills. Wasn’t into that other niche of pop culture, associated themes, and controversial subject matter.
There was a war on and family was in harms way, that’s all that mattered back then in my tiny little piece of the world.
