I followed a cabinetry company called Plain English on Instagram and screenshotted its pantries, which came in paint colors like Kipper and Boiled Egg. Plain English cost a fortune, but around a corner in the back of its New York showroom you could check out the budget version, called British Standard. But it cost a fortune too. I wished there was a budget British Standard. I wished there was a room behind that room, the cabinets getting flimsier and flimsier until a door opened and let me back into my own shitty American kitchen, just as it was.
My husband talked to the architect; my husband talked to the builder. And I kept paring the plans down, down, making them cheaper, making them simpler. I nixed the island and found a stainless-steel worktable at a restaurant-supply store online for $299. I started fantasizing about replacing the counters with two-by-fours on sawhorses and hanging the pots from nails on the wall. Slowly, I realized, I didn’t want this kitchen. Slowly, I realized, I didn’t want this life.
I didn’t want to renovate. I wanted to get divorced.

Reminds me of my own mother, who destroyed our family when I was five. So amazingly selfish, and followed by a trail of destruction a mile wide.

Seriously, the spiritual vacuity and depravity of these people is breathtaking. And yet these people seemingly have no idea of how very sick and odd they are.
I've heard that women go looking for the perfect man. And when they find him, they insist on changing him into something that more perfectly matches her standards. But men often do not like to be changed. This can be a sore spot and lead to many divorces.

When I began my first career job, I noticed there was an older man working there, he was 70. Most everyone else there had retired before 60 as that was the requirement unless you asked to stay and it was approved. I asked one of his buddies why is he still here, surely he is maxed out on benefits, one based on years. His buddy said he wife divorced him some time ago and the divorce settlement was she got half his retirement. His comment was, she will never see a penny as I don’t plan to retire!

GF of over two years. Same story, but not married, thank you Lord. Left to do her own “thing”...buy “her own” house. Thankfully we never married or this story could be her in full. I had a strong willed relative who raised a son by herself. (her choice). He moved away, married a woman, had children, and the relative can only see them at a restaurant over a meal once or twice a year.

I’ve noticed down through the years that, by and large, the fancier and more expensive the kitchen, the less the homeowners do any cooking in it. It’s for show.
