I am all in favor of diversity and inclusivity in theory, but when the pilot comes on the horn and welcomes us from the cockpit, I want to feel that he or she is a Republican. I want to hear authority in the voice, a growliness that comes from having shouted orders at people. I do not want my pilot to come on singing “Off we go into the wild blue yonder” and if he does, I’m off the plane. If it’s a woman pilot, I want her to be crisp and chill, not warm and caring. If she mentions turbulent conditions ahead, I don’t want to hear concern in her voice. I do not want her to thank us for flying — that’s for the flight attendants. I prefer my pilot to be a Republican with military service, preferably at the rank of captain or higher, preferably as an aviator, not in the Quartermaster Corps. I’m a Democrat and I’d be leery of a progressive Democrat pilot whose concern about air pollution might make him reluctant to use full power on takeoff. I don’t want anyone like me up front. No deep thinkers. A high-flier, please.

I never understood the “I’m a democrat” but...” BS
Democrats are destroying this country and its citizens. It’s being done purposely. Democrats do NOT pass laws that help America.
He still has his sharp wit about him even though he was canceled by cancel culture and lost his star mantle after decades of excellent work.
“I don’t want anyone like me up front. No deep thinkers.”
Garrison is still very impressed with himself, I see.
He's celebrating his goober, beta-male status.
So odd. I’m a Democrat, but I think that only Republicans are competent and responsible.
“I want to hear authority in the voice, a growliness that comes from having shouted orders at people.”
That would be a Democrat politician.
I’ll bet he feels the same way about his medical doctors... but with that he has some control. With a pilot he’s at the whim of white liberals.
I can barely fly a paper airplane.
Quite frankly, I'd have no issues with my pilot singing that. It's the Air Force song.
This guy has always had a hate on for republicans. He already has his FU money so he won’t care if he gets “cancelled” by his unforgiving intellectual fans.
So, Gary wrote: “I am all in favor of diversity and inclusivity in theory, but ... I prefer my pilot to be a Republican with military service, preferably at the rank of captain or higher, preferably as an aviator, not in the Quartermaster Corps.”
So, basically he wants a white man as the pilot, when you take into account the following demographics —
— Republican with military service
— rank of captain or higher
— aviator
Actually, even as an old-style liberal guy from Minnesota, Garrison was entertaining and knew that he was no more than he is. Thinker , yes, and damned smart enough to know that he couldn’t,wouldn’t, didn’t want to pilot a plane.
You pay me to be the poet, i’ll pay you to be the pilot.
The voice of command does NOT require shouting except maybe in combat.
I wouldn’t put any funny man in front either.
“I’m a Democrat and I’d be leery of a progressive Democrat pilot whose concern about air pollution might make him reluctant to use full power on takeoff.”
That looks like an excellent jumping off point for some self-reflection for Garrison Keillor. Why be a Democrat? You want the pilot to come from the people and culture that you spent decades mercilessly lampooning. Who were you trying to impress with that? What/whose agenda were you serving?
“...sung by four Black men in Alabama ...who are living in a cruel society where they must walk a careful line, avoiding missteps that could easily lead to lynching...”
Just can’t let go of the nonsense.
An old black man once told me how great it was growing up in Mississippi — in the Forties. I told him he had better be careful about saying such things.
My little brother in his mid 50s has been an airline captain for decades. Unfortunately, he is a Democrat, but he sounds like a Republican. It is not from shouting orders in the cockpit; it is from shouting orders at his 5 kids.
This year after he was vaccinated, he failed his biannual FAA first class medical exam and was grounded. For some reason the FAA approved flight surgeon was looking for myocarditis/pericarditis from the Pfizer. And big surprise... he found it. He went to multiple doctors and specialists. He was told that he was at much greater risk of dropping over dead from heart failure.
But worry not, after his airline suffered a devastating loss of pilots and had to cancel numerous flights, he got a call telling him to go to a specific flight surgeon in another state who gave him some type of variance allowing him back in the cockpit. And after all this trouble over a vaccine induced malady, he is sounding even more like a Republican.
Anybody can fly a plane; it’s the landing that’s a real b!tch.
