The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you wonโt be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnโt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Gonna be zero here tonight. Only about 15 today for a high temp.
Supposed to improve in a couple days to the 20s, a real heat wave.
It was hard to toss such a healthy Mojito Mint. I have a good source for free cuttings though, so I will have another one.
I almost planted it in a wild place where it could do its thing, but decided to just fling it on the compost pile and try not to feel bad about it.

Pictures like the snow scene here make me glad I have a touch screen so I can double the size of the picture.
I see the little squares. I tried clicking them once, then clicking twice. Nothing happened. No little hand either.
How do you make them show?
The neighbor next to my beach cottage planted English ivy along my fence. In the past several years it has spread across 70 feet of my property and is now attacking the neighbor on the other side. I bought a property with bamboo all over the back yard. I am still trying to get rid of it after 20 years, but don’t want to poison my potential garden in the process. Bottom line, be careful what you plant. You might succeed if you cover it with black plastic, or old carpet, and several feet beyond the area where it now grows. In a year it might be gone. Then if you want it plant it in a container or an area surrounded by concrete or asphalt.
January Gardening To-Do List
Monthly Chores for Each Region - The Spruce
All Regions:
In the deep south, January continues to bring welcome relief from the heat to plants and gardeners alike. Take advantage of the weather by growing cool-season vegetables and cool-season annuals and by undertaking garden chores too vigorous to take on during the summer heat.
For Northerners, January is another matter altogether, it is the gardening off-season. This off-season is a good time to daydream about your garden or new plants. If you have not done so already, put yourself on the mailing lists for the major national seed, bulb, and live-plant retailers. Their catalogs offer a wealth of free information, including planting and care details.
All Regions
January is a good time to pore over garden catalogs and get orders submitted for spring gardening.
Check for frost heaves around your outdoor plants and apply additional mulch as needed.
If you have received a poinsettia plant (Euphorbia pulcherrima ) for Christmas, put it in a window where it gets as much direct light as possible. Water the plant when the soil surface is dry to the touch. Allow the water to come out of the bottom of the pot; however, do not allow the poinsettia to sit in water.
If you are storing bulbs, corms, or tubers, check them to make sure that they are neither rotting nor too dry.
Recycle your cut Christmas tree, plant or maintain your living Christmas tree.
Prune fruit trees to promote healthy growth and fruit production.
Clean and sharpen gardening tools.

I’m told that kiwis need pruning in order to flower. It’s how they respond to damage. I haven’t been able to test this myself, but, are you keeping yours pruned regularly?
I’ll ask, definitely!
I did in the beginning. Must confess not as good recently. But, they are so small, it almost isn’t worth the space they take up. So, was looking for something I don’t have, that could benefit from the posts and wires, if I remove the Arctic Kiwi. Don’t really want the abundance and ripening issues of the regular kiwi.
GELATO DI TARTUFO / serves 6 chocolate lovers.
Ingredients: 3 C rich chocolate ice cream or gelato 1 box (3 1/2 oz. size) glace cherries 1/4 C Cheri-Suisse liqueur 2 pkg. (8-oz.) bittersweet or unsweetened chocolate 2 C heavy cream 4 T superfine sugar or powdered sugar 1/4 t pure vanilla 6 pirouette cookies
Directions: Two days or more before serving, cut cherries in half and marinate in liqueur at room temperature,. Chop the chocolate very fine (best done in a food processor) and refrigerate. Make 6 ice cream balls and place in individual dishes. Insert in each of the balls 6 halves of the cherries. Roll each ball in chopped chocolate, coating thoroughly. Place the Tartufos in the freezer overnight (if you like they can be frozen for a week ahead).
To serve, pipe a dollop of whipped cream into the center of a dessert plate. Place a Tartufo in the corner of the cream and top with a big cap of whipped cream. Sprinkle with finely chopped chocolate and then stick a pirouette cookie into the cream on a diagonal. Looks amazing, tastes even better!
I heard back from two salsify growers so far. They both say that the key is watching the seed-head when it forms. The seeds are carried by wind the same way dandelion seeds are, but salsify seeds are bigger so they should be easier to contain. If you decide to let any go to seed, put a bag or something over the flower after the petals fall away. As long as you do that, they say you won’t have a problem.
I can do that.
Liz, absolutely delicious! Thank you for posting!
Bummer! (The pictures you posted later are very nice!)
None of them show for me either. :(
So glad you liked it.
Oh sorry to hear that. The pictures are uploaded to my husband’s website (car restoration hobby) and that probably triggers a virus warning or unsafe website warning for some internet virus protection services.
We will try uploading to another place sometime.
I have had 3 people say they can’t view the photos.
