This year's winning illusion was titled The Phantom QueenMatt Pritchard VIEW 1 IMAGES
An innovative anamorphic illusion has taken the top prize in the annual Best Illusion of the Year contest. Twisting minds for 17 years the contest highlights the ways our brain can be tricked using simple perceptual illusions.
The annual illusion contest is run by the Neural Correlate Society, an organization devoted to promoting awareness of the science behind perception and cognition. For 17 years the annual contest has consistently delivered an assortment of compelling illusions, frequently underpinned by fascinating scientific principles.

I don’t get it. It looks like someone set up two (mostly) identical chess boards and just placed all the pieces as if there was a mirror between them and added the queen to one.
The board surface squares’ color texture clearly does not match.

No kidding — nine squares across and thirteen deep. 117 squares vs 64.
Strikes me as a dopey “illusion.” Where is the illusion?

Thanks. I just did. It IS a mirror. I was seeing the pattern on the “screen” hiding the queen not matching the rest of the board, but that’s not really relevant to the fact that the illusion does actually work.
