Around The World In 80 Days remake is slammed by furious viewers for its 'woke' take on Jules Verne classic with colour-blind casting and classic male role re-imagined as a woman

A new adaptation of Jules Verne classic Around The World In 80 Days has been dismissed as 'woke nonsense' by furious BBC license payers.

The eight-part adaptation starring David Tennant as globetrotting Phileas Fogg launched on Boxing Day, but a series of socially conscious tweaks to the legendary tale left viewers choking on their turkey sandwiches.

Two notable departures from Verne's original 1872 text sees Passepartout, Fogg's loyal valet, played by a black actor - French star Ibrahim Koma - while Detective Fix also gets a modern-day makeover.

Yes, leave the classics alone, for gosh sakes.

When Merv Griffin wasn’t properly warned in advance by his staff when he interviewed a cast member of The Wiz (the all black remake of the Wizard of Oz) he was off guard and said “What? But, no. No, you can’t take a great classic and ruin it like that. That’s sacrilege. Are you serious?” He was told it was already in the plan of the studio.

On 80 Days? First of all “No.”
Jules Verne actually used a lot of ethnic and nationality traits widely held as true at the time. Accept it was a different time.

Two of my all time childhood favorites The Time Machine and Journey to the Center of the Earth were totally ruined as remakes. A shame.

Detective Fix also gets a modern-day makeover.

Will she become gay like the new Della Street?

Not Lia Thomas the swimmer ???

She could play Ted Kennedy in a Chappaquiddick remake.

More color blind than the one in 2004 with Jackie Chan?! Maybe actually see it first and stop being so precious about skin color. How about worry if the actors are any good.

I NEVER go see a remake. Lessons learned years ago.

And another quack film will go down the drain; what’s that expression? A fool and his money is soon parted. So where did the fool get his money from in the first place? From foolish investors.

Invariably cruddy remakes and sequels exposed the dearth of creativity in show business long ago. There are only a handful of stories in the world and they are rewritten over and over.

Goes double for remakes who’s only sales point is changing up the gender or ethnicity of the primary character. Boring.

I saw the original movie at the Carthay Circle Theater in Los Angeles in May, 1958 and was very impressed. The theater, where many blockbusters premiered, was razed in 1969.

Around the World in 80 Days is one of those movies that should never be remade, especially given the atmosphere of wokeness that pervades Hollywood.

Only good point on this thread. It’s always funny to watch people get all upset at recasting in movies; just because a book or a movie had a white guy originally doesn’t mean it *has* to in a remake, I find it kind of interesting and not at all annoying.

*BUT* I’d rather see something original. A reboot just for the sake of being ‘woke’ sucks, casting a black person or a woman where there was originally a white man shouldn’t be an issue to anyone other than a raging racist *if* the color or gender didn’t really matter, but it’s just dumb when it does. Someone was all butthurt that a character in Dune was portrayed as a black woman, but it made no difference to the plot; but I think changing it when it *does* matter is idiotic.

An interesting fact. The first person to actually travel around the world in 80 days was a female New York World reporter, Nellie Bly, in 1882.

So, although it is a rewrite / remake, perhaps it isn’t actually unrealistic.

Yep..

I can’t possibly care less if it doesn’t matter and it’s being remade anyway, can’t stand it when it’s ALL about changing gender or race.

Oh yeah I remember they made that remake of the Wild Wild West with Will Smith.

Somebody told me that they could have had some black secret service agents right after the Civil War., but even if true why take an established storyline and set of characters, and change things just to be politically correct?
