The first Taiga electric snowmobiles have gone into production, customer deliveries expected to follow in early 2022Taiga Motors VIEW 6 IMAGES

Back in 2018, Quebec's Taiga Motors announced an all-electric snowmobile called the TS2 that could get up to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds. The company tweaked the design the following year, and expanded the model range to three. Now the first consumer-ready vehicles have rolled off the production line.

"Today represents the shared dream and vision of our entire organization coming to life as the first snowmobiles come off the production line. I am proud of the demonstrated ability and perseverance from employees who together have overcome challenges as we navigate unprecedented supply chain volatility," said Taiga CEO Sam Bruneau. "With the sleds soon ready for the snow, we are excited by the idea of our customers being able to ride on these cutting-edge machines that embody winter exploration without compromise."

To me the question of outfitting a remote location with that needed to sustain reliable transportation to and from said location wouldn’t be met with an electric snowmobile. It is far easier to pull a sled with gas than one filled with batteries that have to start out charged and stay charged.

Tow a sled so you can bring extra people on your new EV Donnermobile...

I actually use snowmobiles to get to our cabin. There's not one chance that I would buy such a thing. We have no electric service there and I use solar cells and gold cart batteries. No chance ever of me using an electric snowmobile. At least at the current state of technology. (Ba da bing)

Where is the charging station on the trail?

Follow the map, it's about 150 miles east of your location.

I have friends in northern Michigan who are avid winter snowmobilers. They'll spend an entire day on the trails and back roads, stopping for lunch at a bar somewhere. There is no way in heck an electric sled would provide them with the ride time they need from a gas sled.

Performance wise they look pretty inviting but they're just a novelty.

I wonder where they are going to charge them up way out in no man’s land especially in wintertime.

I mean if you know you’re going on a long trip, you carry an extra 5 gallon can with you or something like that.

FAIL. Tough enough to find charging stations in the cities, but rural mountains? Puhlease.

Right, because gasoline is widely available in nature.

Recent invention!

There’s these things called “gas cans.” They can go everywhere your snowmobile goes.

Yes, gas cans are a thing.
They tend to empty, and can only be refilled at specialized service centers.

Obviously range on EVs remains an issue in some cases, an issue being mitigated. Range is increasing, and sourcing includes vastly more options.

Yes, I know, I was just being obtuse.

Plus, (I've never even seen a snowmobile in person so I wouldn't know for sure) snowmobiles have a reserve fuel tank, just like a motorcycle, haven't they?
