Founder of Seal Team Six dies aged 81: Richard Marcinko was tasked with setting up special forces unit after 1979 Iran hostage crisis, named it 'six' to fool Russian forces and spent 15 months in jail for $100,000 kickback scandal

The first commanding officer of SEAL Team Six - the US military's vaunted counter-terrorism unit that would hunt down and kill Osama Bin Laden - died Sunday at age 81.

Richard 'Dick' Marcinko was tasked with designing the counter-terrorist team after the Iran hostage crisis in 1979.

Marcinko, along with another Navy representative, was on a task force to help free the American hostages in Iran, but were unsuccessful.

The mission, known as Operation Eagle Claw, highlighted deficiencies within the US military command structure and revealed the need for a full-time counter-terrorist team.

Marcinko launched the United States' third SEAL team in August 1980, calling it SEAL Team Six in order to fool the Soviet Union's KGB into thinking there were three other SEAL teams they didn't know about. He commanded the unit until July 1983.

I've known one SEAL. I asked him what is most memorable mission was. All he did was smile and answer by saying, "we did some neat stuff."

That's the way they are. Our C-130 unit transported a lot of SEALs over the years and not once did any of them ever talk about any mission they had ever been on. The only mission I know about was the one to the Mustang Ranch, and only because we had rental cars and were their transportation there.

I worked on a project with a guy who was one of the original members of Delta. We figured he was ex-military but not until it was over and I saw his CV I know.

Also knew a guy who was a 60’s Green Beret. He never said anything about what he did.

“hunt down and kill Osama Bin Laden”

—————————————————————

Hunt down? Sone hunt. The CIA knew for quite some time exactly where bin Laden was. Obama had just simply been keeping bin Laden on ice until an opportune time presented itself to go and pick him up.

What most people don’t understand is that opportune time came as a direct result of Donald Trump pressuring obammie over his many false and fraudulent birth certificates. Obama ordered the pick up as a way to take the heat off his phony certificate scandal.

Simply put, Donald Trump was directly responsible for the capture of Osama bin Laden.

I was delighted to briefly meet Marcinko at the Blade Show about 13 years ago.
As I walked nearby, wondering how to approach him without being an idiot, this famous grizzled pockmarked killer came toward me - squealing & cooing with delight to meet my baby girl I was carrying in a sling.

I keep a signed copy of Rogue Warrior in my office desk. Top drawer. Thinking outside the box is essential, you just have to know the limits, which is where he ran into trouble.

It should go without saying that the Iran rescue goat--- was another Jimmy Carter success story, and was not and is not the fault of Richard Marcinko.

I remember his “unless otherwise directed” memos, which he would send to his commander after he had already left for a mission and was incommunicado.

I think he was actually a comedian at heart, or at least that’s how he ended up. Both times I met him, literally everything he said or gestured to me or others was full of humor. And it was good.

One of my favorite (likely fictional) stories in one of his books was the time they had to go through extraordinary measures to place a tracking device on a submarine docked in the enemy harbor. After the hell he went through just to get there, he thought to himself, hey I actually have enough C4 on me just to sink the damn thing right here, wouldn’t that be better than just tracking it, when it might do some damage to us while simply being tracked?

You can guess the hell that broke loose after that , both there, and when he got back to headquarters.

There was Special Ops before Demo Dick and there's Special Ops after Demo Dick.

Special Ops after Demo Dick is far more sophisticated, far more clandestine, far more strategic, and far more lethal.

What happened to cause that transformation was Demo Dick.

UNODIR is a Navy tradition. It is (or was) the thing that differentiated Naval Officers from other officers.

Man, that’s a damn shame. I enjoyed his books. And he leaves behind one hell of a legacy.

RIP Dick
