Forty-eight passengers and crew members tested positive for COVID-19 on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas ship, which docked at PortMiami on Saturday, the cruise company said.
Miami-based Royal Caribbean said in a statement on Sunday that each person who tested positive immediately went into quarantine. Six people who had tested positive disembarked the ship mid-voyage and were transported home.
The passengers who tested positive were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
The new cases come as the omicron variant is quickly spreading across the United States, potentially throwing a wrench in holiday travel plans. Royal Caribbean said that Symphony of Sea’s future trips would not be affected. The ship has left Miami for a new trip to Mexico, according to vesselfinder.com.
The ship that pulled into Miami on Saturday left port on Dec. 11 with 6,091 passengers and crew on board, 95% of whom were fully vaccinated. Of the 48 who tested positive for Covid-19, 98% were fully vaccinated.
The 48 confirmed cases may be a setback for the cruise industry, which has slowly restarted over the past six months.
Cruise industry leaders say that being on a cruise ship is the safest kind of vacation travelers can take at the moment because of the controlled environment where they can mandate vaccines. But breakthrough infections have the potential to put the industry in a bad spot again.
Cruises were COVID-19 hot spots at the onset of the pandemic, causing the industry to completely shut down for over a year. Many cruise lines had to take on massive debts while they were unable to make any revenue for the better part of a year.
This report will be updated.

It was just on the 5th of December, that a Norwegian Cruise Line ship docked in New Orleans with at least 10 breakthrough cases of Covid on board.
Since they know math is hard for the masses, I’ll help out.
98% of the 48 vaccinated passengers is 47.4. Curious they couldn’t say this in the article.
Fauci and the Pharma-Psychos’ worst nightmare is a fast-spreading weak-symptom variant. Let it be so.
98% full vaccinated....means LESS than one not vaccinated.
My understanding is you couldn’t get on the ship without a vaccination card. It was mandatory. Had to be 100%
Best get another booster so the previous booster and the two jab initial will work well but we may need another booster for the latest booster because we don’t know if that booster will boost the other booster. I am so confused but I haven’t taken the jab yet just in case and I feel great.
No as in a cough.
No, I didn’t make that assumption, which is why I was curious about their cabin locations (shared AC ducts? elevators? Those cabins only?)
At least some of the 48 likely picked it up while on a shore trip, and if it only spread that far ...
Interesting, given the way it seemed to spread like wildfire on cruise ships in the early days.
as in pneumonia
and no viral isolation from the lower respiratory tract. Also in South Africa where cases are rising hospitalizations are declining. I know hospitalizations are a lagging indicator but i would think we would see something by now
Fair - and I made an unfair assumption. cheers
The article said that those over 12 years of age had to be vaccinated, so it makes sense that 47 of the 48 were over 12 and vaccinated, one under 12 and not vaccinated.
No. as in pneumonia
I went on one cruise, to Alaska the summer before Covid. It was pretty obvious as a petri dish for disease, and although we enjoyed our trip, vowed I would never go on another.
Wow! That is fantastic news!
Now, if only Omicron will displace Delta the way Delta displaced Beta and friends ... the end could be in sight? As in it will be more like milder strains of influenza, with need to protect the elderly and those in fragile health, but no more lock downs (which did not work anyway) and all the rest?
I wonder what the qc issues of millions and millions of vaccines are. Nuts.
right in line with the original ship data indicating a very low transmission rate and very low lethality.
all the data we needed to make the right moves was there at the beginning in 2020 (or very soon thereafter). what a colossal, imbecilic, unnecessary loss of life (our elderly and compromised) and from our small businesses.
and so much for the “moronic” variant.
And they require everyone to be vaccinated. Was suppose to be on one of their ships right now but canceled because they changed policy.
No, not unfair. I wasn’t clear. I wonder if any changes were made (say, like to ductwork, etc.) during the time the cruise ships were offline, or procedures put in place that mitigated spread, too. Things I was musing about inside my own noggin and did not spell out. It would be interesting to know.
