Five children fell to their death and five others were injured when a bouncy castle was blown into the air by a gust of wind outside an Australian school Thursday.
The unimaginable tragedy took place during a celebration marking the last week of classes before Christmas break at Hillcrest primary school in northern Tasmania, police said.
Four children fell from about 33 feet when winds sent an inflatable castle into the air at Hillcrest Primary School in Australia on Dec. 16, 2021. AP The children in the bouncy castle were tossed from a height of about 33 feet on a sunny, early summer day that was forecast by local weather services to have “light winds.”
The victims were all in sixth grade and included two boys and two girls. The gender of a fifth child who later died in the hospital is unclear.

Horrible.
I understand this to mean that the child's first name doesn't provide a clue to his or her sex.
Unless it was even more brutal a fall than indicated, I think "unknown" would have been a better choice than "unclear".
Awful but regardless of the forecast why wasn’t this secured better?

This isn’t the first time this has happened.
I would have hoped suppliers would be instructed about properly anchoring these things by now.
Pat.
I’m guessing high enough wind pulled it out
Only remedy is watch wind....be attentive
Maybe. But you’d want to make sure you’re right or really ready to punch a grieving family in the gut.
Just think about a family whose kid died and gets called the wrong sex.
They’d be irrationally angry.
The solutions in the aftermath of this are gonna be extreme vigilance and really heavy securing or a ban of bouncy castles.
Oh damn, what an awful thing.
Probably not a good idea to place them in Cornwall or Pebble Beach
Windy places
Or having guards around the inflatable unit, with Bowie Knives, to deflate it quickly.
Those knives are illegal there IIRC.
Those bouncy castles are dangerous. So sad for the family of the children.
Good point.
This is so horrific for everyone involved. But I have to admit, my first reaction was “how are kids in a bounce house in Australia?”. I thought they were all still in Lockdown Hell.
