Whether to use I or me depends on whether the phrase is the subject of the sentence or the object of the sentence. I is a subject pronoun, and the subject is the person or thing doing the action as in "I went to the store." Me is an object pronoun, and the object is the person or thing the action happens to as in "Alex liked me." Use you and I when it is the subject of the sentence; use you and me when it is the object of the sentence. Here are some example sentences with you and I as the subject, doing the action:
In the sentences above, you and I are the people doing the actions. Here are some example sentences with you and me as the object, receiving the action:
The rules above are what you should use in formal writing, but they are often broken in speech. Some people think you and I is more formal or educated sounding and you and me is more conversational or casual, so it's not unusual to hear someone say "He gave it to you and I" if they are trying to sound very formal, or "You and me should go to the store" if they are speaking very casually.
I hope this helps.
How very tragic that with the dumbing down of the U.S. educational system, English grammar is often lacking in the basic education. A hundred years ago students who had completed a decent 4th grade education knew and had internatlized the content of what is being taught in this posting. This was equally true of students from recent immigrant families in which the parents spoke no English and were poor and illiterate. This mistake would not have been made in either oral or written usage. They understood this as well as their arithmetic times tables.
There is a simple test. Answer the question in your head as if it were asked in the singular. If the answer is me, then that’s it, but if the answer is I then that’s it. But be aware that me and you is a frequent case of bad grammar in 21st Century America.

NOW I’M TOTALLY CONFUSED
Also, I would add, always put the other person first in the sentence.
The easiest way to sort out who vs. whom is to substitute “he” or “him”. You’ll know immediately which sounds right.
You and I
Are subject to
The blues now and then...
It just doesn’t sound right. Nor would Bo Diddley singing, “Whom do you love?”
Me Tarzan, you Jane.
Those are a little tricky sometimes for me too
What about proper usage of “we” and “us”?
Or “they” and “them”...
You and I must make a pact to bring salvation back.
1. My friend and I went to the store.
2. I and my friend went to the store.
3. Me and my friend went to the store.
4. My friend and me went to the store.
1 and 3 sound right, 2 and 4 don’t.
I went to the store. (Correct English)
Me went to store. (Correct Tontoese).
That’s what I was taught, too.
That’s the way I have generally made sense of this.
You should have learned this in early grade school.
Further proof we are producing generations of ignorant people.
The democrats will be in charge for a hundred years, or until the Chinese take over, which is coming.
I was never very good with grammer; there are rules upon rules with a whole list of exceptions. And proof is this thread and done get me started with what “sounds right”. What sounds right is what you often hear, which can be technically wrong.
Math is so much easier; the integral of sin x always is cos x.
RE: You should have learned this in early grade school.
Yes we should. But listen to today’s music and you’ll understand why the English language is changing rapidly in the United States.
Agreed. It drives myself up the wall too.
Nothing grates on my nerves more than the basic grammar errors. The “I” and “me” usage is so easy to figure out but why the Hell aren’t kids taught proper English? I told my parents years ago that I could be on my death bed uttering my final words and they’d correct my grammar.
“Between you and me ...”
“You and I” are correct on the issue.
