When deer eyes can see laundry detergent residue, hunters must work hard to stay hidden
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | 3 Dec 2021 | JOHN HAYES

With a deeper perception of blues into the ultraviolet range, deer see not only blue jeans but residue from UV brighteners in laundry detergent that is invisible to humans.

Deer pupils gather more light, and a greater concentration of light-dark photoreceptors gives them better night vision. Eyes positioned on the sides of the head give deer a broader field of view.

Deer have incredible motion detection. They can see a hunter blink from a distance, but if there’s no additional movement they don’t know what it is.

Sounds like a great opportunity to create Hide laundry detergent! Our detergent lets you look like dirt to deer but clean to your family and friends!

They already do make laundry detergent for hunting clothes.

That little tidbit about night vision cheaters seeing soap residue is pretty much useless info since none of our recent enemies weren’t noted for bathing. But I do remember our Lurps being coached up on not using after shave, mints, scented soap or anything else that did not smell like jungle or desert-—if we could smell it so could they!

Shooting animals from the deck is not hunting.

And it’s expensive. Dry washing in baking soda works great.

Sitting on my back porch, I often see the deer come out of the woods. Every now and then, I game them by sitting perfectly still. They stare intently at me — unsure if I am real or not. After a while, they seem to conclude I am fake and get real close. At some point, I would move an arm, usually to sip a drink. When that happens, they look really puzzled for a second, then scamper away. Pretty sure I blinked, though.

Might even leave the sound on for a commercial like that!

(And I do remember "ring around the collar"... ;>)

To be fair to deer eyesight, the speed of a car is probably harder to judge than the speed of a bear.

I like cammo clothes but in reality they’re not needed for hunting...

I bought cammo flip-flops, lose them outdoors, but find them with the lawn mower. :(

There is a theory that the ancients coated themselves in Red Ocher past/dust because the red color helped camouflage them when hunting.

“washing his clothes to remove any soap.”
Then his wife added some dryer sheets in the pockets as they hung up to dry...to keep his camos fresh?

I’d install a polka dot patterned light projector of
proper wavelength if the 30mph flash dash events would stop.

That has been on the market since the 1980s or maybe earlier.

“Shooting animals from the deck is not hunting.”

Grandpa shot a nice buck out the kitchen window at age 96! It was ‘pestering his garden.’

Yep. We took the guns away after that - didn’t know he still had a shotgun or could still load it!

My two newest pups, ‘Shasta’ and ‘Fremont’ attended the ‘Rabies Round-Up’ today. Beau’s hunt club sponsors it and people pay what they can for rabies shots for their hunting dogs. They vaccinated 180 dogs between 8am and Noon and raised about $500 for the club! Excellent turn-out, today.

Wait. WHAT? You’re supposed to WASH your hunting duds from season to season? I’ll alert Beau, LOL!

Neither is sitting in a tree stand.. It’s called sitting. Or baiting deer etc.

Point was fairly straightforward to most and yes I’ve hunted where you actually track and follow not sit in a tree stand... cammo not required.
