Harris County commissioners voted Tuesday to demolish and rebuild parts of the under-construction Beltway 8 bridge over the Houston Ship Channel after the original designs were found to have "significant" flaws. The setback will cost the county $291 million, including $50 million to demolish some sections that have already been built, according to the Houston Chronicle's Dug Begley.
Work on the new Beltway 8 Bridge began in 2018, the same year another FIGG-constructed bridge collapsed near Florida International University in Miami, killing six people and putting the company's practices into question.
COWI determined that there were 21 different "significant" design flaws, which halted construction work altogether.
"It would have led to failure of the bridge."
Don't expect a grand explosion to bring down the existing structures. Crews will systematically demolish the towers and build new, stronger ones in their place.

WOW!
And who pays for this mess?
Uh, I think it might have been a good idea to review the designs before construction.
Seems like FIGG has management problems....
Math is Racist.
It would be interesting to learn the date of the COW1 review of the FIGG contract; how long after the Florida collapse investigation.
And the date of the COW1 Report structural anaysis.
There’s been a whole lot of back room activity going on to wash some folks hands. Somebody, an engineer for sure, reviewed the FIGG contract proposal and signed off on it. Who dat?
Affirmative Action has consequences.
Get used to this. When you look at the leaning tower of San Francisco, the collapsed pedestrian bridge in Florida, as well others, there are consequences to not paying for talent.
Galloping Gertie.
“Mistakes were made…”
Unfortunately, they were MATH mistakes.
And no mention of this on their homepage, figgbridge.com.
Go figure.
Portland?
You just have to know that the other bidders would have pointed out flaws in the design. Who issued the permit?
Fake for sure. Don’t know where it was supposed to be.
My first thought!
The same design firm was hired to build the new harbor bridge in Corpus Christi, and after the Florida bridge collapse they were fired and their design was thrown in the trash can.
TXDOT managed to turn a 3 year project into 7-plus years. Construction on the towers just re-started after a 2 year delay. Figg better hire good bankruptcy lawyers.

Wait, you mean we can’t just design a bridge with legos and then scale it up?
