Brian Kelly bolting Notre Dame for LSU is latest example of a sport gone mad
Yahoo Sports ^ | November 29, 2021 | Dan Wetzel

It would only require one or two results this weekend – none of them farfetched – for Notre Dame to reach the College Football Playoff for the third time in four seasons, including each of the past two.

Maybe Georgia blows out Alabama. Maybe Baylor or Iowa beat Oklahoma State or Michigan. Maybe Cincinnati stumbles. That’s it. That’s all it would take.

If it happens, Notre Dame will compete once again in the playoff … only this time without its head coach.

It is the latest example of a sport gone mad – with money, with realignment, with championship aspirations, with deception and ego, and power plays and who knows what other good soap opera stuff. Whatever it is, know this: Brian Kelly is expected to leave Notre Dame after 12 seasons to take over a rebuilding project at LSU.

I remember in the early 1980s, 1982 to be exact, Texas A&M offered Bo Schembechler $3 MM over a 10 year contract. Michigan with an assist from Domino's founder Tom Monaghan was able to match the offer. A $300 K annual salary would have been 14 times median family income in 1982. The rumor is LSU is going to pay Kelly $15 MM a year; 230 times current median family income. I find it hilarious during 2020 with COVID athletic departments were crying poverty. A year later they can pay football coaches more than what coaches earn in the NFL.

College football is definitely spiraling out of control. The screwls need to stop structuring the coach’s contracts so that they get 10’s of millions of dollars when they fail and get fired. And don’t get me started on the NIL situation where certain players get paid big money.

I hate ND. Brian Kelly is a scumbag, however. Must be a Democrat. No honor.

Good for Kelly for doing what’s best for his career; however, the timing sure sucks. ND has a pretty decent team this season.

These moves make sense. ND without a conference, and its academic standards, always has a difficult path to a national championship. All the kids in Lousiana (La has the most NFL players of any state) want to play at LSU. Kelly wants to win a national championship. Riley is talented, but the first QB he recruited failed, and just entered the portal. Riley is afraid of playing in the SEC, and took a great job with a huge paycheck.
These two guys made a job decision based on personal desires and money. Happens all the time in business. No big deal, other than the visibility.

Auburn fired Mike Bobo their offensive coordinator after blowing the lead late in the game and losing to Alabama, he is getting a 2.5 million buyout......2.5 million for an assistant coach...

And salaries this high may actually do more harm than good — it won’t be conducive to healthy football programs. Coaches won’t be allowed the proper time to build or restore a program — results will be expected immediately — and if not delivered staffs will see significant turnover.

I am a college football.

As a kid in the 80s, I went to all the Nebraska home games from 1980 to 1994 (except for 5).

However, when my older sister when to college I met some of the players. Some were great people. Some should never passed high school.

When I went to school, I met more. There was a great running back for Iowa State that I got to know. A wonderful man. He was, however, illiterate.

College sports has been nuts for a long time. As a taxpayer, I have to question the amount of money we are spending on this game, for little return.

talked to an LSU fan last week about the coaching situation, and he said “it’s a good thing oil is $80/barrel.”

Just to be contrarian, the DJIA has gone up by +40x since 1982. $300k x 50 = $15M. It’s within the ballpark. Good though is only up 6x.

LSU's offer to Kelly is for 10-years "that will take him north of $100 million.

So, he will perhaps start out at 15 million, but the per year salary has to decrease over the years for the above statement to work out mathematically. Unless the north figure is 150 million. 🙂

Rest the entire article. Didn’t see a “New Coach” mentioned.
Urban Meyer is my first thought.

Many ND fans had grown tried of BK. His departure was probably just a matter of time. Maybe now they can bring back the real grass.

The first question to enter my mind is are all his credits transferrable?

Will he need summer school to raise some his nontransferrable low grades?

Notre Dame is overrated, almost lost to FSU and barely beat Toledo, and the one good team they did play, Cincinnati, beat them. To think Cincinnati is better than even when Kelly coached them.

I would have said Urban would be a shoo-in, but I think the lap-dance incident may have been a bridge too far, knowing his shenanigans when he was at UF with the coeds.
