No I never heard of Hookman's ghost. I'll look into it. I'll counter whether you or he know the story of the "Trial of the Century" in New Brunswick and the media sensation of a witness referred to as "the pig woman". Believe it or not I came across this story from a book of infmaous unsolved murders I bought in Gibraltar because when I lived in Spain I was desperate for anything the read in English. Obviously it taking place in New Brunswick caught my eye. It's not supernatural but it was sort of a Gabby Petito level national interest story back in the 1920s.

I'm in the process of gathering the facts of a late 19th century serial killer in Cherry Hill that I stumbled upon, nobody seems to know anything about this one but it's pretty creepy. I've been toying with writing a short story or something based on it.

Half the kids don’t show up at school the first day of hunting season.

By the way, old newspapers can be pretty fun to read. In that serial killer story I was talking about the story of one of the murders (1890) has this little snippet in it:

It is thought that while he was upstairs Annie came from the cellar, and doubtless hearing a noise went up to her room. It is thought the death struggle began there and continued down the stairs. When the kitchen was reached it is thought that the thief attempted to add another crime to robbery.

Attempted to add another crime. He's not talking about the murder here. Victorians. Hinted at it but just couldn't say it ...

“For any of you who’ve ever watched ‘The Sopranos,’ the Pine Barrens were famous . . . the soil at the Pine Barrens is sand,” Deputy District Attorney John Lewin said then. “It doesn’t freeze, so if you kill somebody in the middle of winter, you need to have sand you can dig into. This is a notorious Mafia burial ground.”

Live and learn.

Something new everyday.

Bear it in mind when you do your next hit for the mob.

One million acres is a plot of land almost 40 miles by 40 miles. Lots of land!

I read the article. The ATV was found near their home with the shotgun. So, WHAT did they drive into the pine forest as the title of the article states???

I lived in NJ for 8 years. I lived and worked in a rural area in the NW. For projects on the southern coast we would drive from our rural area, through Trenton, and then the Pine Barrens.

Those miles in the Pine Barrens were LONG. And every time it amazed me how NJ could be the most densely populated state. “Boy - they must really pack them in, in Newark.”
