So just how much of a magnetic field would be needed to protect Mars and the humans that might someday live on it? Surprisingly, the team writes that the force needed to deflect say, solar wind, is about the same as a regular fridge magnet. But they’d need to generate it over the entire planet, a substantial challenge.
The scientists suggested a few ways to pull it off. These include restarting and circulating Mars’ iron core, creating a continuous solid loop or loop of solid-state magnets, or using a chain of coupled sources with a controlled beam or a plasma torus — a big ring, basically — of charged particles with an artificial current. This means there are options that include hardware in locations as wide ranging as the Martian surface and Martian orbit.
While each option has pros and cons, the team concluded that reigniting Mars’ core is least feasible, and creating a plasma torus with blasted-off moon material would not significantly erode Mars’ satellites. That latter option also somewhat mimics the plasma torus created in Io’s orbit around Jupiter.
Needless to say, creating a magnetic field would require massive resources; the absolute bare minimum of power needed would be around is around 10¹⁷ joules, which was nearly the entire power consumption of all humans on Earth in 2020. That means we’ll likely need to employ nuclear fission reactors as a power source, which team speculates would likely be required for permanent colonization anyway.

JUST LEAVE IT ALONE...
Fishing for funds scam. Not one tax dollar should be spent on this.
Marvin is not alone.
It’s not about what they’re talking about.
It’s about getting some of that sweet sweet grant money to continue talking about titillating ‘science’ stories.
A magnetic field is also very helpful for keeping solar radiation lower.
It’s the fundamental science behind the green new deal. Once you believe it, anything is possible. And you feel so smart. Which is something AOC craves.
Just activate those ancient alien reactors under the surface to melt the underground ice and release oxygen. It worked immediately for Arnold.
Solar radiation is already lower than it is here due to the longer orbit. Martian colonists will need an atmosphere to breathe without having to stay inside the constraints of a glorified habitrail.
Tesla shakes head wrong wrong.....
I’ve been saying for a while elsewhere that the only way to terraform Mars is to first give it a global magnetic field. I think the best way would be to ring the surface with a superconducting cable and power it up. The circumference of Mars is about 12,000 miles: while it’s feasible to construct 12,000 miles worth of superconducting cable and even feasible to power it with a standard fission reactor, transporting and assembling sections all around the Martian equator is a problem. We’d need automated rovers at each landing point to unspool and connect the various sections. That said, it would be easier to manufacture the cable on Earth than to stand up the infrastructure to create the cable on Mars. To manufacture it on Mars requires locating, mining, and refining the necessary materials, manufacturing the cable, and then sending it out from a single manufacturing plant all the way around the planet’s circumference.
I just looked it up, the average temperature on mars is minus 81 degrees F. If we just send all our horrible gasoline consuming cars and trucks there it will cause global warming and all the CO2 hanging around will give you an atmosphere in no time.
Why are we seeing all these articles lately about colonizing other planets?
I have an idea!
Windmills!
But first of course all we have to do is give Mars weather, and to do that Mars needs an atmosphere, and to do that we need to warm the planet up, and to do that, we need a magnetic field, and we can generate that with torroids and electricity from windmills...wait...somethings....wrong here.
Dyson she!!.🤔
—reminds me of a couple of ideas from tenured “professors” some years ago—
A) Straighten up the earth’s axis to eliminate seasons —
B) Blast the moon into fragments to give Earth rings like Saturn—
Option B would be catastrophic for the Earth. We would lose the stabilizing force on our axial tilt. Earth’s tilt would start varying chaotically between 0 and 90 degrees as the other planets started tugging on it. That’s the problem Mars has now.
Junk science and in the manner of children playing with fire.
Humans working in the kindergarten of planetary and solar system science should not be given scientific matches to play with. They are worse than fools.
Maybe in 2000 years humans MIGHT know how to handle and control what those pseudo scientists are considering. but right now we are a long way off from there.
Lol. They are paid to sit around and come up with these ideas? Just what are the exact steps necessary to accomplish this? What specific technology is going to be used to get the core spinning again?
“Scientists Propose Jumpstarting Mars’ Magnetic Field to Make It Habitable”
no biggie, all they need to do is melt the core of the planet ...
