Photo Gallery of 30 classically beautiful or avant-garde American restaurants. I am thinking this may bring back some great memories for some of the Free Republic Night Crew.

This is BS. The best restaurants are known only to the locals that live nearby.

Loveliest as in appearance, not as in best food and service, from what I can tell.

You misread the title.

Not best restaurants.

Loveliest restaurants.

I believe the Chart House in Weehawken NJ (also known as the 'Charred House') burned down twice. There as a wedding going on when one of the fires happened and luckily no one was hurt. The bride and groom took pictures on the firetrucks.

The restaurant has an incredible view and the food is very good.

Farallon Reportedly Closes for Good After 23 Years of Upscale Union Square Seafood(Ughhh!)
Eater San Francisco ^ | Aug 20, 2020, | Eve Batey

Posted on 8/20/2020, 10:54:38 PM by Vendome

Opened in 1997, upscale Union Square restaurant Farallon was known as much for its wild decor as for its menu of tourist-pleasing seafood dishes. The restaurant shut its doors when San Francisco’s shelter in place began in March, saying then that it would reopen when it was “allowed to return to normal operating hours.” But with normalcy still a distant hope, the restaurant has closed for good, SF Gate reports, sending an email to workers saying that the spot will not reopen when the pandemic ends.

In recent years, the decor might have been more of a draw that the food itself. In 2010, then-Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer praised both the menu of sustainable seafood and the spot’s design (co-founder Pat Kuleto is a prolific restaurant designer, as well as the owner of numerous Bay Area restaurants), saying it “feels like an underwater fantasy” and described it as “the big fish of seafood restaurants.” By 2015, however, Bauer said, “I’ve always been enamored with the interior of Farallon,” but “given the price, it wouldn’t now be at the top of my list of recommendations.”

It feels obvious to say that if a spot’s primary draw is its dining room, it’s in a tough spot these days — with indoor dining on pause in San Francisco for an unknown length of time, venues are reliant on the loyalty of their patrons and the quality of their food to make it through this unprecedented period. Add to that the challenge of operating in Union Square, with tourism tanking and downtown workers at home, and it’s hard to see a way forward for spots like Farallon.

OMG

I love Farallon

The decor is amazing, the food just wonderful and the wait staff are so professional and at eaze.

I could hang out the bar while waiting for a table or well, just hang out at the bar.

What's next? Michael Mina and Gary Danko?

Covid-19 is killing everything.

I’m surprised many lovely restaurants survived the lockdowns. If some or most of the appeal is the ambiance and all they could do was take out. The Cliff House in the SF area closed. I guess the view didn’t make up for the bad food.

Re: #22 - Cap's on the Water, St. Augustine, Florida

I will speculate the St. Augustine restaurant is run by the same family that owns Cap's Place in Fort Lauderdale.

Cap's Place in Lauderdale has a hugely colorful history dating all the way back to bootleggers in the 1920s and a secret casino protected by Meyer Lansky. Churchill and FDR ate dinner and allegedly gambled there in 1942.

Did they list the Taco Bell with a deck on the Pacific, where that couple had their wedding reception?

Bacchus in Milwaukee is pretty with great views but is pretentious and stuffy serving $30 rubber chicken .

The loveliest restaurant in my area is a sit-down pizza joint with Trump campaign memorabilia on the walls and a worn, battered Biden-Harris bumper sticker on the floor just inside the front door. LOL.

Even so… after looking at the pictures… I’d still say there are thousands of quaint inns and taverns that “lovely” that no one has heard of unless they live or work within a half-hour drive.

For example, I live in Bucks county PA, and there are dozens of beautiful eating places along the Delaware river that easily rival the ones pictured.

Sure, a few have been written up and have received national attention - but most aren’t near enough to a big city or tourist attraction and are not known outside a certain range.

Many of them like it that way…a big part of the appeal is the feeling that they are “out of the way”. For me, a big part of the appeal is that the deplorables outnumber the lefties and the lefties mostly keep their mouths shut.

I would imagine it is the same everywhere across rural America.

I still remember with great fondness the Cliff House in San Francisco with its hardwood floor and Ramos Fizz.

I like old diners. Particularly the converted rail car ones. And the more chrome and stainless steel the better.

Just lovely.

Because dragging your lei through the soup and having it drip down your clothes is sooo avant-guarde. How many times has someone tipped their glass over into the rotted parts of those wooden tables? I don’t want to have to fight with a tablecloth throughout dinner. Ugh, the one with the fake royals, just no.

But then, I despise going out to eat. Too expensive. Who knows when the guy tossing the salad with his hands last washed those hands. There’s always an obnoxious drunk at the next table, or loud phone conversations or bratty kids running and screaming. No, thanks. Better food at home where it’s peaceful and relaxing.

Growing up in New Orleans my parent’s favorites were Brennan’s and The Court of Two Sisters.
