Tesla has yet to explain the outage, but the issue appears to span the globe.

Based on several posts on Twitter, it seems that Tesla owners around the world are reporting not being able to connect their phone to their vehicle or, in some cases, not even being able to start the car.

The reports mention an unexplained "500 Internal Server Error," which is, unfortunately, a pretty generic error. The existence of he outage appears to be corroborated by the website DownDetector.com, with 74% of reports of outages referring to the app. Tesla boss Elon Musk responded to one user that he was checking on the issue,...

as it was explained to me, your phone is your key there is a ‘valet mode’ but it only works for a short distance before it auto-stops, so valets don’t take your car on a joyride

I like a key for my key and I like to be able to start and operate my car wherever I might be, even somewhere out in the boondocks. I have been driving for nearly fifty years and have owned cars from every decade from the 1960s to the present, and that has always been a winning combination. An internet connection? I just sat down at my laptop and my connection was down. It happens often enough, but I'm at home, not trying to go someplace, so it's usually no big deal. As far as "valet mode" is concerned, I can count on one hand the times I have used a valet, the last time being about 20 years ago. Give me a car with AC, power windows, and a decent radio, and which I can fuel up at the nearest BP, Shell, or Mobil, and I'm ready to go. The good news is my driving days will be just about over before this EV thing really kicks in.

If commies take over country they’ll use Teslas to murder their opponents... Windows up, locks frozen in place and right off the bridge, cliff, or mountain...

In a world of terabytes of storage, gigabytes or RAM, and megabits/second of throughput, why do so many OSes and programs insist on obscure error code numbers?

Old computer joke:

Ken Thompson [the inventor of Unix] has an automobile which he helped design. Unlike most automobiles, it has neither speedometer, nor gas gauge, nor any of the other numerous idiot lights which plague the modern driver. Rather, if the driver makes a mistake, a giant “?” lights up in the center of the dashboard. “The experienced driver,” says Thompson, “will usually know what’s wrong.”

You are screwed in the Peoples' Republic of Vermont where the anti-tower nuts have made the state a third world country.

A lot of Vermont, some of NH, and much of rural ME has no cell service.

We have a couple devices using a server somewhere. Sometimes they work OK, other times the take so long to react, we start to wonder if they broke. I sure wouldn’t want a car depending on some one’s server to start it.

So I guess you preferred Stanley over Baker Electric.

Of course, Doble is better than Stanley.
