Tesla has yet to explain the outage, but the issue appears to span the globe.
Based on several posts on Twitter, it seems that Tesla owners around the world are reporting not being able to connect their phone to their vehicle or, in some cases, not even being able to start the car.
The reports mention an unexplained "500 Internal Server Error," which is, unfortunately, a pretty generic error. The existence of he outage appears to be corroborated by the website DownDetector.com, with 74% of reports of outages referring to the app. Tesla boss Elon Musk responded to one user that he was checking on the issue,...

So if you buy one of these you need an internet connection and the car needs to “phone home” before it will operate? Reason number 1,000 never to purchase one of these.
I am never having a car that depends on servers.
Seems to me i’d still like my car to be able to drive when the internet connectivity isn’t there.
Get a guy like Gomer Pyle to get to your breakdown site with his tow truck from Wally’s Filling Station and bring a gallon of gas and jumper cables.
Uh, sorry, I forgot. No can do with an EV.
as it was explained to me, your phone is your key
there is a ‘valet mode’ but it only works for a short distance before it auto-stops, so valets don’t take your car on a joyride
Tesla is a cool niche car but it shouldn’t be mainstream. Unfortunately, our government officials already have made that decision for us.
Oooo, I sure hope the ransomware terrorists don’t starting smelling blood in the water here.
RE: I am never having a car that depends on servers.
Relax.
If the FBI, CIA and DOJ, plus local police clear you of being a conservative terrorist then they should turn your car back on unless you protested CRT or BLM stuff at your kid’s school.
Then get a scooter (non electric) or a skateboard or wait for a bus. Gas cars will be outlawed (or a gallon will cost $35 which equals outlawed.)
My concern is that future cars will be connected to servers and it will not be disclosed—or they will claim there is an “off” switch but that is just put there to make the owner feel good—with no actual effect.
Can’t start your car unless you’re logged in? What can possibly go wrong.
I thought the phrase “Must have connection to the internet” was strictly a software restriction.
Lol.. now we cant even drive our effing cars without it?
A software-controlled car is soooo vulnerable.
To everything.
Electric car? Yup, probably will get one...but not right now.
But keep the programming wienies outta it. If I want electronic control, I’ll take logic gates - not an OS mucking things up by remote control.
I have at least one or two vehicles that don’t even have ECUs.
There are 4 ways to unlock a Tesla, one being use of a phone to remotely unlock via server. If you don’t have a second means handy, that’s your problem - not everywhere has a cell connection.
Odd timing that right after Musk starts punching-left, he gets hit by hackers. Whatever “Anonymous” started out as, they are now tools of the DNC.
“Tesla server outage allegedly leaves owners unable to drive their cars”
Not sure what one has to do with each other. I can see how a server outage limits what the customers can show off to their friends, but hard to see how driving is affected, since people don’t buy Tesla’s to actually drive.
Yeah, I'd buy a Stanley Steamer before I'd purchase an electric vehicle.
I read a book, from the Teenage Book Club, Circa 1960’s, called The Wasp. The guy was an espionage agent on a distant planet. When the situation turned to chaos from his actions, the government shut down all private vehicles from a central command.
