Ann Arbor will require all public restrooms in the city to carry menstrual products under a new ordinance that takes effect in January.
It means pads and tampons, as well as soap and toilet paper, will have to be available for free in every public restroom throughout the Michigan city.
"We as a society, for too long, have not taken menstruation seriously," Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor told NPR. "Access to menstrual products is a fundamental human necessity."
Some U.S. states and cities already supply free menstrual products at certain locations, such as school and homeless shelters, but Taylor said he believes Ann Arbor is the first jurisdiction to require them in all public restrooms.
"It's a matter of equity and personal dignity," he said. "I'm just glad that we were able to provide a public good at a low cost."
Last year, Scotland became the first country to offer menstrual products for free.
Taylor said he proposed the ordinance after hearing from a high school student who was concerned that people without established residences would have a hard time obtaining menstrual products. Ann Arbor's city council passed the ordinance unanimously on Monday.

They’ll vanish as soon as they stock them.
If they’re cheaper in the boys’ bathrooms, I will go in.

LOL!
Isn’t cool that these folks have the power to just command certain necessities to appear out of nowhere for free. It’s almost like Jesus feeding the multitudes. Perhaps next they can command the laws of nature to control weather, time, and gravity.
At least, now you can ask your husband to get you one.

It has become all too frequent that I have to check to see if these stories are coming from Babylon Bee.
What woman doesn’t carry her own for just in case.
But what the heck. It’s just taxpayers’ money. Waste all you want. There’s more where that came from!
Gynocracy, my derriere.
Do you seriously think there are any women high up in the misogynistic cabal ramrodding this cluster foxtrot?
Deep State hates women. This is continuing proof of just how much.
Just to devil’s advocate - I think the law does require toilet paper in public bathrooms? So it’s kind of akin to that.
OTOH - Michigan removed the state sales tax from menstrual products. I’m willing to bet they left the sales tax in place for toilet paper... and Condoms.
I can see a future with a lot less public bathrooms.
If you are not required by law you will not have a public bathroom.
If you have a public bathroom and stock it with free feminine products there will be those women that fill their purses with menstrual products every time they visit your establishment.
Most businesses won’t be able to absorb that cost.
If you don’t have to have a public restroom you won’t.
If you are legally required to have a public restroom you will find a way to control the dispensing of those goods.
“If you need menstrual products please ask a cashier.”
