Following a tumultuous year for Tesla including a company relocation helmed by CEO Elon Musk, viral reports of cars on fire and other self-admitted quality control issues, Tesla has plummeted on Consumer Reports’ annual list of most-reliable carmakers.
The electric car manufacturer now ranks 27th out of 28 car brands on Consumer Reports’ list, above only Ford-owned legacy luxury brand Lincoln. Much of it has to do with the overall instability of electric vehicles in general — especially SUVs — which Consumer Reports’ Jake Fisher said during a presentation are the “absolute bottom in terms of reliability,” according to Reuters.
Among the concerns Consumer Reports had for the Tesla Model S, X and Y lines, according to CNBC, were issues with “heat pumps, air conditioning” and notoriously, misaligned panels. It’s also worth noting that Tesla’s Model X ranked dead-last among all cars for reliability, scoring a 5 out of 100.
The issue, Consumer Reports’ Fisher told CNBC, is that the company has the tendency to “add so much tech that is not necessary.” And while this makes for a product that varies wildly from year to year, it is part of the Tesla brand that enthusiasts adore.

Worse than Fiat? Yikes!
Well, they kill people.
Is Tesla made in China now ?
But they look cool and you be saving the planet!/s
Likely the batteries are all ChiCom made.
Tesla buyers aren’t after reliability, only image.
The reason Japan slayed the US car industry to a large extent was on reliability. Tesla is on thin ice if it becomes known as a maker of unreliable stuff regardless of how cool and cutting edge it is.
The Xiden Marxist domestic enemy occupation doesn’t care. They’re going to keep doing everything they possibly can to raise gas prices up and up and up until everyone buys an electric vehicle
They have operating plants in Calif and Shanghai, and are building additional plants in Austin TX and Brandenburg Germany.
Looks like they’re having a fire sale. Some smoking hot deals to be made. Hurry on down folks.
People don’t buy them because they are good. People buy them because they say “Look at me! I’m cool and rich and I look like I care about climate!”
Ping.
Oh boy, the electric golf kart boyz will not like this thread......
I’ve seen a lot of complaints that their service operations are overwhelmed. I know when I go by the service building here in Indianapolis the parking lot is always overflowing with cars.
“People don’t buy them because they are good.”
There are two reasons people buy cars:
1) To get from point A to point B
2) to get laid
Right now Teslas are only bought because they are seen as cool, especially to the opposite sex. But fashion changes very quickly.
Consumer Reports is questionable IMO. In the 80’s they did a review of BMX bikes and the one pictured on the cover had nearly dozen things wrong with how it had been assembled.
I knew a guy who has spent time at their plant. The cars have some diagnostics where they flash the lights if there is any electronic fault during production.
He said about 75% came off the line needing some sort of rework.
I wonder if Greta only goes out with guys who drive Teslas?
