An Atlanta neighborhood becomes a food desert overnight

The unmarked security vehicles parked outside the Kroger signaled trouble. So, too, did the police tape blocking the store’s entrance at Metropolitan Parkway SW and Cleveland Avenue SW several days ago. A small sign taped to an overturned shopping cart flapped in the wind telling shoppers the power was out. Thieves had stolen critical electric wiring.

A much larger sign said “Temporarily Closed” and identified two other store locations for shoppers in the area, neither of which was easily accessible without some form of transportation.

Just someone who couldn’t control their “urges”.

I love the idea of ordering online, and have done so a few times. The first was fine, but the second time the sweet delivery girl kept calling saying the store was out of this item, then this item, then that item, etc. etc. No problem because I substituted the items, but for a higher price. It was a bit pricey for tip, delivery fee, and service fee attached to the tab.

I fled the big city 12 years ago. It’s been wonderful since. All my friends still in the big city do nothing by gripe about it.

Wake. Up.

It will only get worse, it’s been heading this direction for over 50 years.

Yep...driving through Portland area reminds me of just that...3rd world. Which is why there is an exodus to lower population areas...

I haven’t tried buying groceries online yet, largely because I like to inspect produce and other items before I buy them. That way I can avoid dented cans, crushed or opened packages, etc.

“Theft of infrastructure is a third world problem.” Yep. Once while on public transit in Chicago I listened to two black fellows laughing and boasting of the wiring and tools they’d stolen from construction sites. These two didn’t know one another; it was a chance meeting and they discovered they had theft in common. This is what that Ahmad Arbury fellow was doing: casing construction sites during daylight, intending to return that night to steal whatever struck his feral fancy. He’d done it before, according to surveillance tape.

The key for small retail operating in an urban environment is to have all the employees be relatives.

Zero outsiders = zero employee theft.

Otherwise the business will be robbed blind in the back room.

In my neighborhood, I have a Winn-Dixie (I wonder when the left will boycott the name 🤓), 2 Publix, a Fresh Market, Spouts, Trader Joe’s, a Target with a grocery section, 2 Walmarts and a Whole Foods. Of course, it is an upscale area, but near my office, I have a Publix, Publix Greenwise, a Duckweed (natural food store) and I heard Winn-Dixie is building a store... My office is getting gentrified. 🤓

In Tampa Kroger (which doesn’t have any stores in Florida, except a Harris Teeter), has the delivery service. We tried it... 4 stars..

Some suggestions -

1. Look around for flash delivery specials and other deals on sites like SlickDeals.net - you can see your delivery fees drop to nothing, or find a discount on a delivery service memebership that pays for itself in just a few weeks.
2. If you live in some areas, you can get Amazon/Whole Foods fresh food delivery cheap or free with a Prime subscription.
3. Many sites do have real time inventory online for their stores. Walmart and Sam’s Club online inventories bear only the most coincidental resemblance to reality so if you’re getting some sort of same day delivery of an order, they’re the most likely to need substitutions that can drive up the price.
