Not a life I’d like to live, but he’s fascinating. Hat’s off to him for doing it his way.
Damn, that site requires creating an account to read the story.
The only thing I could say I would have on my “bucket list” would be to live through a winter in a primitive cabin in the mountains, or live for a year on a deserted island. I am pretty much in awe of this guy.
A Paywall has fenced me in. Oh well.
I was wondering if he ever goes into town or to a bank?
Does he have no family left that is important to him?
What about hygiene needs?
About 6 months ago, there was an 80 y/o man living on someone else’s property. He said there was an agreement allowing him to stay, but the present 84 y/o owner said no, there was no deal. This guy was arrested for squatting and jailed.
During his jail stay, the owner (or somebody) reported that the old shack had all of a sudden burnt down to the ground, just like that! I can’t recall other details.
There are times when that is very tempting.
“Beryl Novak bought 40 acres of forest here in 1966 for $700,”
He bought this at 15 or 16?
“Beryl Novak bought 40 acres of forest here in 1966 for $700.”
A sound purchase. I wish I owned a chunk of land like this.

More or less halfway between Hibbing and International Falls.
Not the end of the Earth, but you can see the end of the Earth from there...
He reminds me of Richard L. Proenneke. I respect, admire, and support fellow men who see how truly sick our society has become, and try to keep away from it as best as possible.
Think of Obi Wan Kenobi from the 1977 Star Wars Film.
Same principle.
Some men just get fed up with the stupid crap, and move far away from it.
A man who lives in a tidy house is (1) married, or (2) has a housekeeper, or (3) is gay.
I admire his non-attachment to the rat race, but wonder if the attachment to isolation in the forest is better.
I’ve done both and feel that the middle road is best.
If the dems get their way, a whole lot of folks who do not want to will have to live this way. That old saying “lucky to have a roof over my head” is going to be a real thing.
“If people would read what Thoreau wrote in the 1800s it might help them today,” Novak said. “Simplify your life. That’s what I’ve done. … People out there working to make more money are just chasing their tails.”
Yep... slavery to that dollar.
Best story I’ve read in a long time........thanks
Having grouse hunted myself but with a shotgun, I am pretty damn impressed!
Nothing wrong with the way he is living. I knew a man whose house burned, so he moved what he had left to his well house and lived there.
He retired on his military pension at the age of 45. While not much, it probably pays for his real needs.
