The armorer on the set of "Rust" offered a chilling theory through her attorneys about what led to the accidental shooting death of Halyna Hutchins.
Armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed was one of four people who handled the weapon prior to Alec Baldwin firing it while rehearsing a scene for the indie-western. As a result, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said that the investigation is largely focused on her as well as how a live round made its way to the set of the film at all.
Speaking on the "Today" show Wednesday Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence claim that the bullets their client loaded into the gun on the day of the shooting were taken from a box that was only supposed to contain dummy rounds that were incapable of firing. However, because the ammunition was left unattended from roughly 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, they believe the opportunity was there for a disgruntled crew member to mix a live round into the box.
"We don’t know, however, whether that live round came from that box," Bowlees said. "We’re assuming it did. We’re assuming somebody put that live round in that box, which, if you think about that, the person who put the live round in the box of dummy rounds had to have the purpose of sabotaging the set. There’s no other reason you would do that. That you would mix that live round with the dummy rounds."

Old Soviets
If you read the lawyers comments for the AD and armorer, It’s finger pointing. Add to that Alec running off at the mouth, it’s everybodys fault but theirs. If I were the judge, I’d add it all up and declare them all equally guilty of manslaughter and sentence them. But that’s me.
I just looked up "dummy rounds" and found "J&M Spec. LLC" sells dummy rounds using these four approaches for quick visual detection and safety:
![]() | Empty Primer Pockets – This option is the most basic form of any new brass. There is an empty space where the primer (round piece in the center at the bottom of the case) would be. This option aids in identifying these as inert and is fine for most displays, reenactors, or dry-firing, though we have had trouble with them cycling in some Glock pistols after releasing the striker. |
![]() | Rubber Inserts – This is the most popular option for gunsmiths and those doing dry-fire training and function checking. The orange rubber insert replaces the primer and enables the user to see firing pin engagement as well as aiding in identification as inert. It also gives comfort to those who believe in “cushioning the blow” to the firing pin while dry-firing. |
![]() | Spent Primers In – This is the best option for film props, reenactors, and displays where the most realistic looking cartridges are required. A spent (fired) primer is inserted into the cartridge case so that the only difference in appearance between it and a live round is the indention in the primer caused by the firing pin. These are the most realistic looking dummy rounds available! |
![]() | Holes Drilled (& Empty Primer Pockets or Rubber Inserts) – For this option, we drill a single hole in each cartridge case. This is a further aid in identifying the cartridges as dummy rounds |
Could be true, could be armorer tryng to deflect blame or muddy the water
This is nonsense. You check the gun before it is brought on set.
And once again when it is on set.
She and the crew left for a lunch break.
What was the specific model of pistol Baldwin used to shoot the director?
I ask, because I have a number of .45 Long Colt single action pistols, both original and replica. With several, I can tell if the weapon is loaded from the rear, as you can see the edge of the shell casings.
Note, not the round about to be fired, but every other round.
1. Never let the government take away your guns.
Alec Baldwin has repeatedly opposed your inalienable right to keep and bear arms as identified in the Second Amendment.
2. All guns are always loaded.
Alec Baldwin did not check to see if the gun had live ammunition.
3. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Alec Baldwin pointed the gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
4. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Alec Baldwin had his finger on the trigger and pulled it while aiming at a human being during a rehearsal.
5. Identify your target (and what is behind it).
Alec Baldwin didn't consider that his target was Halyna Hutchins and that director Joel Souza was behind her.
In addition to the five rules, firearm safety protocols on a film set are designed to prevent negligent or malicious shootings with a live weapon. Who broke which protocol?
white supremist republican males funded by the NRA of course.
and the guns weren’t secured... OK!
Attorneys speculate sabotage Hollywood liberal walks.
Any body didn’t see that coming was asleep.
” With several, I can tell if the weapon is loaded from the rear, as you can see the edge of the shell casings.”
It was ‘loaded’ with dummies which have to be individually inspected.
Vintage Pietta 45 LC.
“and the guns weren’t secured... OK!”
Sources say the were.
Obviously that’s the only hope they’ve got to keep that dolt out of jail. Fingerprints? Wiped gun? Wiped shell casing? Unknown bullets? Where is their evidence?
Who handed Baldwin the weapon? Why didn’t that person check to see if it was loaded? Isn’t that what she is paid to do? And Baldwin, who didn’t check the weapon is ultimately responsible.
Pretty simple really.
“Wiped shell casing?”
Reported:
Armorer loaded gun
Armorer ‘demonstrated’ gun was ‘safe’
Armorer removed and handled spent casing before cops arrived
Gun contained four rounds with drilled casings and one with no drilled holes.
“Doesn’t matter, it was still her job to,check before handing alac the gun,, and she and the other fella failed.”
It’s Baldwin’s job to check any gun he’s going to fire also. It’s usually done with the armorer and others present.
It’s also Baldwin’s job as producer to make sure if a gun is in his hand a ballistic shield is in place to protect anyone in the line of fire, blanks, empty, doesn’t matter.
Yes Ive said that in the past too. All are responsible for what happened. I would also, add that anyone who j going to,be the subject that has the gun Pointed at them also should have thr right to check the gun themselves before the scene.
Someone is going to get tagged.
There is a very dead body.
That mysterious ‘somebody’....
Somebody ( whose job it was to know the difference between a blank and a live load ) put said cartridge into the weapon, after it had found it’s mysterious way into a box of blanks....
And was stoopid enough to NOT REALIZE it was a LIVE ROUND?!
This is what we’re supposed to believe?
Nonsense!
