The 30-30 is a great hunting rifle, it is very cheap to reload, it likes cast lead bullets. With 170 grain cast lead bullets it is very deadly for deer and hogs, out to 150-200 yards.

It is my favorite rifle. But I have much heavier rifles too.

.308 is a much faster, longer range, accurate descendant from the old faithful 30-06.

All together, 30 caliber is still an incredible choice.

It works reasonably well & in the past was not too expensive.

Since you brought up his name, the Winchester 94 is one of John Browning’s timeless designs.

From the law enforcement side, it is said that .22 rimfire has sent it’s fair share of people to their final judgement as well.

I recall reading that lever-action carbines were the most common type of rifle in the United States, up until Bill Clinton made the AR-15 very popular by trying to ban it. At some point during the past decade or so, the cumulative (known) number of ARs finally edged into the lead.

The lever-action has been in production here for a century and a half, and 126 of those years include the '94 Winchester and its direct competitors. With just basic care, most of those lever guns are still functional.

There's a mountain of those rifles in existence, many of which are chambered in .30-30. That's why the caliber is "still with us". You may as well ask the same about the .22LR.

"killed more deer in history" ;)

I would argue that unofficially, that distinction goes to the .22 long rifle.

Because boomer fudds want to play cowboy with never action toys.

You can get identical ballistics in an AR sized platform that holds 30 rounds is semiautomatic and with a stamp make it an SBR with a can on the front end with an overall length of 26” the AR will do identical ballistics with 300AAC or 7.62x39 better yet welcome to the 21st century gramps and drop into a 6.5 grendal on that AR in 16” barrel and 8 inch can it’s hearing safe has 300+ yards of reach at its MPBR something the 30_30 couldn’t hope to match. A 140gr 6.5 will can be MPBR sighted at 300+ point and shoot easy
.

If you have a Remington 788, make sure it was fixed. They recalled a lot of 788s because the would fire on their own. You could chamber a round and lay it on a table and it would fire on it’s own within five minutes. I have seen this happen.

News to me. What was the fix? I hunted for a couple of seasons with a 788 in .308. Never a problem.

K-31 is a couple of pounds heavier. Freeper SWAMPSNIPER (RIP) used one for his hunting.

Beautiful!
Am calling them to order sling and stock wrap combo as a gift for my dad’s lever action Marlin 1894 38/.357 with 24” octagon barrel.

Thanks for sharing that

I would be the .22 LR has killed more deer than anything else. Unless you are just counting the legal ones...

Yeah, but 30 years (until democrats) of cheap SKS and cheap 7.62x39 ammo and growing population proably means the SKS, .22LR and 30-30 are the holy trinity of white tail deer slaying in North America.

I think it was a trigger replacement. Google Remington 788 recall. I think all of the older 700 series were recalled, about 7 million in all, but several people lost their lives with the 788. Most have been fixed, but if I had one, and I did at one time, I would ask a gunsmith to check it out.

I turned my Marlin 336 into a cowboy assault rifle, and it shoots .30-.30.

LOL. Mine too!
