Horror films you can watch with kids. Please add on your suggestions:
Day of the Triffids (1951) Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) Dracula (1931) Horror Hotel (1960) House on Haunted Hill (1959) Nosferatu (1922) The Birds (1963) The Blob (1959) The Canterville Ghost (1944) The Haunting (1963) The House With a Clock in Its Walls (2018) The Others (2001) The Spiral Staircase (1946) The Thing from Another World (1951) The Uninvited (1944) Them! (1954)
Funny movie, but a fair amount of sexual innuendo.
“The Blob (1959)”
You mean the 1988 version (snicker)
Yeah, some. But kids won’t even understand it. ‘What Knockers’ and ‘Roll Roll Roll in the Hay’ are both literal, and innuendo. If you don’t have the mind for innuendo, you’ll just get the superficial joke.
I watched every one of these as a kid.
That may explain a few things about me…

I think there is a role for a certain kind of film, which might be called horror, or might properly be classified as something else, at a certain point in the development of young to mid teens, which addresses the survival and conquest of fear. I haven’t thought it through, but carefully matching the right level of scary to the right child seems important. It is an age when kids can be confronted with nameable and unnameable fears, some as real as the family member in the next or same room, or as vague as death by accident or unknown assailant. Good stories, in whatever medium, can help kids process some of these issues at something of a distance, I think, but one has to be careful, for all the obvious reasons.
“Nosferatu..? A true classic that still creeps me out. Don’t show the kiddies.”
Agree there. When he is assaulting the last victim right before the sun gets him, he is using his left hand on her right breast to steady her from moving. Depending on the age of the kids, it will be seen.

The Ghost Breakers, with Bob Hope, for this one line alone:

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken 1966

My favorite movie.
You can hear the 1938 radio broadcast of Welles’ ‘War of the Worlds’ in several places on the Internet.
Turn down the lights, start a fire if you have a fireplace, light your jack-o-lanterns, make S’mores. (There may be a better digitally cleaned-up version somewhere:

But Alec Baldwin is in it.
Ooh, you beat me to it. But I’m late to the game.
Those 1950 movies mostly giant insects and dinosaurs were fun to watch. King Kong (original)gave me nightmare for years
Does Winona Ryder do her famous ping pong ball trick in that one?
“The Bad Seed”
LOL, I don’t recall it in that one, maybe in Heathers.
The movie that creeped me out as a kid was “The House of Wax” where they showed all the wax figures melting.
A recent one is good, more so for older children -
The Babadook.
Interesting moral about letting fear gain too much power over you.
Re: The Haunting
When the walls started breathing in and out... yep, still scares me too!
Not a horror movie, but “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” is always good for Halloween with kids.
