The deadline for New York City firefighters to get vaccinated was yesterday. Enforcement of the vaccine mandate is anticipated to begin Monday. Today, the New York Post is reporting that 26 FDNY firehouses are currently closed due to short staffing directly related to the vaccine mandate.
But the vaccine mandate is all about the public health, right?
New York – The FDNY shut down 26 firehouses across the Big Apple as of 7:30 a.m. Saturday because of staff shortages caused by the vaccination mandate, The Post has learned.
[…] “Twenty six companies out of service is an unconscionable number,” said Councilman Joe Borelli, a Staten Island Republican who chairs the committee on fire and emergency management. “The firefighters who are unable to work have all been tested within the week and are not Covid positive, and I doubt New Yorkers care about the vaccine status of the person applying defibrillators to their chest.

If you live outside of NYC, you certainly don't care.
The stupidity is staggering.
The most damaging effect of this will not be the fires, but the EMS portion of the first responders job. Which is about 80% of the calls.
The fire service arrive on most medical emergencies way before the ambulance and renders emergency medical assistance, including assisting in delivering babies, CPR, extrication, intubation, and assessments that saves time and lives.
When the closest firehall could have been on scene in 3 minutes is closed, and the second closest is already on a cal somewhere else, the arrival times can be 20-30 minutes.
Also I believe the Fire Department runs the ambulances there also. How many of them are out of service?

The Democrat/communist media can and will lie about how wonderfully the city is getting through this crisis “caused by the unvaxed” but if you are in New York City just look out your front window.
The real upper cut coming to comrade Bill is the fact - not supposition but the fact - that the Sanitation guys are slowing down and garbage is piling up everywhere,
Final thought as of 1:30 this morning there were still dangerously high numbers of unvaxed cops firefighters EMS worker BUT watch what happens tomorrow when the city’s jails shut down.
The media is too stupid to even talk about the fact that the Correction department has the largest percentage (was 49% on Friday) of unvaxed. Even if that number is cut in half the city is deep trouble.
Let’s Go di Blasio!
Wow- FDNY is standing strong. This has to be very tough to do for so many reasons. It’s one thing to protest and speak out against mandates, it’s another thing altogether to take action that results in loss of income, trouble with the power of government and its ability to retaliate.
God bless them and their families.
Oh, and Let’s Go Brandon.
“Thank you. I was wondering what the percentage was. 26 out of 218. 12 percent. I hope there’s no fires.”
Thanks! Your ? should have been covered by the mediot, who did the report.
I’m about ready to buy a cheap calculator to do %’s and other math the mediots can’t do, won’t do, or make errors in their so called reporting.
Some good news comes out of this as a former NYC resident - the city has way too many firehouses as a legacy of the days when NYC had a lot of factories. A smart person would use this as an opportunity to downsize a bloated department (but DiBlasio is not a smart man).
New York Fire Department upper management is really shooting themselves in the foot on this one issue.
You make a very good point. The FDNY Union will regret not fighting this one more vigorously. They may never get those houses back once they’re gone. And they will lose all those union members dues that go with those closed firehouses.
I thank the good Lord we have so many fire service experts on FR such as yourself. Thanks for keeping us informed!
Houses may have more than one company each eg ladder company, hose company and/or rescue company. I’m not sure how the EMTs are classified.
As is the norm with media/government reports, a wholebunchalotta words with little accurate information.
Landlords (commercial and residential) are having a lot of trouble collecting rents....
Fire insurance may start looking good to some of them.
Well leave it to Debasio to create another mess on top of all those he’s already responsible for. I suspect things are going to escalate even further.
Sorry, “hose” S/B “engine”
...and in affect on Halloween. Could be worse. It could be Detroit.
