Sheriff to announce what killed NorCal family of 3, their dog on hike in Sierra National Forest

Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese will hold the news conference Thursday to discuss the mysterious deaths of John Gerrish, his wife, Ellen Chung, their 1-year-old daughter, Miju, and their dog.

They have already ruled out the causes being related to a gun or any other weapon, extreme heat, a lightning strike, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, cyanide exposure, illegal drugs, alcohol or suicide.

I’m sure someone would start to feel shortness of breath and begin to hyperventilate, which would probably make it worse. But it would be only about 2 minutes or less before passing out and death shortly afterwards.

I didn’t mean to disparage a dead man by saying “foolishly”, although I think its accurate. The loss of him and his family was a real tragedy. It makes you wonder though—temperatures that day were 100 degrees +. There was no shade anywhere on the hiking trail since there had been a fire some months earlier. For a guy to take his wife, his infant child, and a dog onto such a trail without sufficient water seems....careless, which it was, and they all paid a heavy price. May God rest their souls.
