A Rhode Island woman’s search for her relative’s displaced gravesite led to the discovery of nearly 1,000 people buried beneath a local highway and an unmarked mass grave containing hundreds of bodies.
Both discoveries were connected to state institution cemeteries in Cranston, where more than 5,000 of Rhode Island’s poor, sick or mentally ill residents were buried between 1875 and 1953.
...worried her relative was buried beneath the state highway
According to the R.I. Department of Transportation, tens of thousands of people drive on Route 37 every day.
Malcolm said the plaque indicating where the mass grave is located was stolen roughly five years ago.

Color me gone...
H.P. Lovecraft wrote about this.....................
When you did you pay good money to get out in the ground and some 100 years later the government will pay good money to dig you up for “science” to support its army of “credentialed” overlords.
If you’re relative died sometime between 1875 and 1953, there’s a darn good chance neither you nor your parents even knew them.
Just what does it matter? This is nothing but a ploy to file a lawsuit.
Well they succeeded.
All Covid I assume?
Katyan (sp.) Forrest American style.
I have no doubt at all. Years ago rumors circled thru the grapevine that the Mob killed and buried people under concrete all over Rhode Island. Mob very big in Providence, Worcestor and Boston, Mass.
In those days? They probably all died of Coyote-flu or TB.
I live in coal strip mine country. Most of the old farms had family cemetaries from the late 1700’s on up.
When they strip mined these farms late 60’s/early 70’s they just pushed them into the pits. No one said a word or cared.
A few of the larger cemetaries they moved or went around.
We have 9 graves on our small farm from the early to late 1800’s. Can only read a few of the sandstone headstones.
That is pretty heavy. Do you wonder about them and their lives? Would you ever allow anyone to disturb the sites, if it was your decision?
I told my Son I want to be buried in the woods in a refrigerator with:
1. A slinky.
2. A videotape of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.
3. One of those long-haired troll dolls.
4. A packet of Ranch Dressing Mix in a jar.
Let them cure archeologists figure that out.
LOL!............. A local highway here was widened a few years back, and there was a single gravesite that had been on an old homestead from the 1800’s that was on the right-of-way and had a small chain link fence around it.
The road department supposedly ‘moved the remains’ to a nearby cemetery so they could work on the road widening. I’ve always wondered if they really did or just said they did and moved the marker only.
Another thing that was odd about this particular grave is it had the date of death as ‘September 31st’..............................................
I intend to be cremated with pockets full of Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn.
“Mob very big in Providence, Worcestor and Boston, Mass.”
I was going to ask how many of the remains might be mob jobs.
50%?
70%?
Might be some fun speculating.
For such a tiny state Rhode Island is incredibly diverse. Lots of quiet rural landscape, tons of crazy urban weirdness. Birthplace of the industrial revolution in the U.S. and the coastline is gorgeous.
We have a graveyard on the grounds of the Tallahassee Airport - and it’s still active.
