A federal judge ruled that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill can continue to use race-based admission practices, saying the school's policy did not discriminate against white and Asian American applicants.
"Seventy years after the first Black students were admitted to U.N.C., the minority students at the university still report being confronted with racial epithets, as well as feeling isolated, ostracized, stereotyped and viewed as tokens," wrote U.S. District Judge Loretta Biggs in a 161-page ruling Monday. "As a whole, underrepresented minorities are admitted at lower rates than their white and Asian American counterparts."
The lawsuit brought by the Students for Fair Admissions accused the university of violating the U.S. Constitution by making race a factor in their admissions process, which they said favored Black and Hispanic applications at the expense of White and Asian American hopefuls.
But Briggs disagreed with the argument, saying that the school's policy was narrowly constitutional because it served a "compelling and substantial interest in pursuing and attaining the educational benefits of diversity."

I am now just an aging boomer who is now retired, so maybe my mind is slipping a bit, but I have always heard that "diversity is a strength" "diversity is a core value" etc., etc., etc.
Diversity in everything except for thought....
But in all the compliance training sessions I've had to endure during my 40+ years of work, nobody has explained to be what makes it so "compelling and substantial".
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem if the most qualified person is another skin color than me, comes from a different part of the world than me, has different reproductive organs than me, etc.
But equality has never been the objective.
Some nebulous quality of "equity" (where either the outcome is the same, or, if different, I come out on the losing end)...and nobody's ever been able to explain how that is beneficial. Maybe I slept through that part of the annual compliance brainwashing session each and every year.
The enrolled student population at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is 59.5% White, 10% Asian, 7.77% Black or African American, 7.76% Hispanic or Latino, 4.77% Two or More Races, 0.388% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.0636% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders.
The law? The Constitution? Who cares? Judges rule these days based upon their feelings. Especially affirmative-action judges like this one. After all, how do you think she got her gig?
Fighting racism with racism only perpetuates it. The racism of preferences is as flawed as the racism of slavery.
Just once, I wish one “non-black” smartass would claim he was black just to see what they would do. And take it all the way to the top.
At some point, the very thing these people do is the opposite of what they want to see happen. The flaw is - one must “see” to know what color someone appears to be. Everyone sees things differently.
Tiger Woods is an example - he’s half Thai - why is he claimed to be “black”?

Poor blackie. Always picked on. /s
I don't think Tiger Woods ever renounced or distanced himself from the non-black part of his heritage. Unlike a certain POTUS not that many years ago.
While the media tries to canonize him for being a black star in a white sport, it just demonstrates the ignorance of the media. Golf is actually a pretty big deal here (Thailand) and there are courses all over the country, including Woods' mother's native province, Kanchanaburi.
On the other end of the spectrum, our beloved VPOTUS is half Indian. She switch-hits whenever it's convenient. But regardless of which ethnicity she is on a given day, there is one constant....(and, we'll just leave it at that)
Just Orwellian word salad.

It’s ok to be racist for a good reason. Got it.
More communism at work.
So pictures are required when submitting a college application these days? Because that’s really the only way college admissions personnel would know if someone was black, other than if their name was Shaneequa or D’Antoine.
If they can continue this nonsense, can they continue receiving Federal (public) funding?
I say nay nay.
I grow weary of negroes with chips on their shoulders.
Given the chance, Clarence Thomas would throw out the whole rotten chain of Scotus’ race-based preference decisions.
...saying the school's policy did not discriminate against white and Asian American applicants.
I knew a guy who was an emigre from South Africa probably 30 years ago, as a child. White as could be. He got his American citizenship his junior year in college. Marched into the financial aid office and got the forms for an African-American scholarship. Black admin was not amused.
Says he got a full ride scholarship his senior year.
Ironic isn’t it? Those we seek the colorblind society, they themselves have to look upon others’ color and make a determination who will benefit.
