Paddy Moloney, a co-founder of the Irish folk band The Chieftains, died today. He was 83 years old. The news was announced by the Irish Traditional Music Archive. No cause of death was given.
Moloney was a hugely important fixture in the Irish folk music scene. For more than 50 years, Moloney led The Chieftains around the world, popularizing traditional Irish music.
The band also collaborated with countless artists and groups from outside of the folk-music world, including Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Emmylou Harris, and Luciano Pavarotti.
Their last show was an early St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2020, before the pandemic forced them to cancel the remainder of their “Irish Goodbye” tour.
When it came to music, Moloney was self-taught. He told NPR in a 2002 interview that his mom bought him a tin whistle when he was six years old, and learning that opened the door to other instruments. …

Hope I didn’t do a repost, because the man died three days ago. A search both on this website and using search engines turned up nothing.
First I heard of it.
Great stuff!
Bummer, Paddy rocked.
“No cause of death was given.” Well CONvid most likely since it is now apparently the cause of ALL deaths. RIP sir.
The Chieftains - one of the few bands I still like.
Long Black Veil with Mick is a classic.
I got to see them a number of times, at Carnegie Hall (used to be a sort of St. Patrick’s Day tradition, until the new performing arts center in Newark NJ opened), and once in Montclair High School where I got to meet them; Derek Bell (harp/dulcimer/piano player) was still alive at that time.
The Chietains are fabulous. Sad news, he was a giant in music. I’ve got to get out my CDs…for a reminiscence with a little Jameson. Love their music.
RIP.
Sad news. Saw them live once when everybody was still alive. I’ll have to give one of their CDs a listen.
Had the pleasure of twice seeing them perform live when they were still in their prime. Their CD with James Galway is a masterpiece of Celtic music
All the great Irish musicians are dead now except Van, and we have to endure Bono..
I was lucky to see them twice, once in Galway where Van Morrison made an appearance, doing three songs with them from this album, which is a great album (IMHO):
Bttt
I have the Irish heartbeat CD.
I have four Christmas CDs - Bing Crosby, The Judds, a collection of various artists, and a Chieftains concert with Nanci Griffith, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, and others.
Yes, I bought vinyl, as I still like that format. Old habits. But I do have a large CD collection as well.
