MINNEAPOLIS (TBEN) – Cory Kohls wasn’t even on a hunting trip when he shot a 616-pound bear in western Wisconsin.
He just spotted the bear on Friday while driving near a cornfield in New Richmond, so he asked the farmers if he could get permission to track down the bear.
“I have a 449 [pound bear] a few years ago, and I thought it was a giant bear until I got this one, ”he said. “It was amazing. It took nine guys to drag him there.
The bear population of Wisconsin is increasing and it is legal to hunt them. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources estimates that there are more than 24,000 bears in the state.
In Minnesota, the bear population is approximately 15,000.

I just read a rather lengthy piece on bear attacks and whether a .22 caliber weapon is useful for defense against a bear. Haha, better take an extra clip if that’s all you’ve got. He’ll wander away after you put about 10 rounds in him!

Tracking with a gun. I call that hunting.
Ya just don't understand! Ya don't shoot the bear with the .22 when it charges. Ya shoot yer partner in the knee and then ya run like hell!
This reminds me of one of my former coworkers. He bragged for months about how he was “baiting” a bear while he waited for bear season. He said the bear was going to make a beautiful bear skin rug. So the first day of hunting season the bear came to get his daily snack and my coworker shot it at close range.
He had a local taxidermist turn the bear into a rug and he brought it into work to show it off... It was about half the size of a normal sheepskin. Howard the bear killer as he was forever known after that, shot a little bear that was more of a cub. The vicious looking face the taxidermist put on him made it even more of a comical. A typical Golden Retriever would have made a larger and scarier rug.

Actually our wiener dog would make a scarier looking rug than Howard’s bear did.
If you’re going to put a bear, I think Wisconsin is a pretty good place.
Canada might have been better.
Mexico even better, but he’d probably cross back over the border hunting illegals.
