The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

I started with the most common letter and then got the first word, which gave me the third word, which suggested the second word, and then it was off to the finish.

Yes. Very quick. More and more I just try to place the major vowels, e o a , and the rest usually follows.
