This one popular app might be behind your terrible iPhone battery life

Apple released iOS 15 a few weeks ago and the update as a whole is well worth checking out. iOS 15 has several compelling new features and, in contrast to previous iOS releases, doesn’t appear to come with a worrisome number of bugs or performance issues. In fact, the only major issue we’ve seen arise in the wake of the iOS 15 release is a decrease in battery life.

To be clear, if you just installed iOS 15 and are experiencing a noticeable decline in battery life, it’s most likely an indexing issue that will go away after a few hours or days. If you’re still encountering a degradation in battery life a few days after the install, the issue may be Spotify.

Spotify and iOS 15 battery life There have been numerous reports of users experiencing huge drops in battery life when running Spotify. One user on a support form said their iPhone was losing upwards of 40% battery life every hour with Spotify open.

I blocked data. My Phone still chewing through 30-40% battery each hour if using Spotify. Apple Podcast app works fine. 3% drain / hour. I have to delete Spotify as my iphone11 is dangerously hot and feels like it will either melt or explode…

Incidentally, these battery life issues first started to arise with the iOS 14.8 update.

A fix is on the way The battery life issue is so widespread that Spotify itself acknowledged it about two weeks ago.

At the time, Spotify recommended that impacted users delete the app entirely and run a clean install.

iPhone users seeking to try this approach should do the following:

1. Open Spotify. In the app’s settings (you can access them by going to Home and then tapping the gear icon in the top right corner), tap Storage then Delete Cache.

2. Head to your device’s Settings, then tap General.

3. Tap iPhone Storage.

4. Select Spotify from the list of apps.

5. Tap Offload the app and confirm. This will delete the app but its documents data will be kept.

6. Then tap Delete App and confirm. This action should delete any leftover documents and data.

7. Once the app is deleted, press and hold the Side/Top button and either volume button until the power off slider appears.

8. Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.

9. After your device turns off, wait a couple of minutes.

10. Press and hold the Top (or Side) button again until the display turns on.

11. Switch your device back on and install Spotify from the App Store.

Spotify also said users should try disabling Background App Refresh by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

A moderator on Spotify’s team said all of the relevant information has been passed on to the appropriate engineering teams. As an avid Spotify user myself, I hope that a fix is coming sooner rather than later.

I imagine Apple would prefer you to use Apple Music.

Ha, I started reading this to find out the solution only to remember that I traded in my iphone 6 months ago. I have gone to the dark side (Android).

Getting old I guess.

I had both Apply and Android for years. My old company issued iPhones.

I can say I never want to see an iPhone again. Microsoft Teams is another battery drainer.

I had my first Samsung Galaxy for nearly 5 years before needing to replace it. I’m on my second now.

I’m considering going back to a flip phone.

Not one of the new-fangled ‘retro’ flip phones that just came out. But a real dumb phone.

“I have gone to the dark side (Android).”

So have I. I bought an iPhone X that I never used. Had it for 2 yr and tried to set it up yesterday. It wouldn’t work. iPhone Geniuses at the apple store said it can’t be fixed.

Screw apple. Tomorrow I get a new Samsung galaxyS21 Ultra 5 G, unlocked so I can say screw Verizon too.

Still working on getting an unlocked phone for my wife...with her phone, I may have to stick with apple. Probably an iPhone X or 11. Does anyone have any experience with any of these?

I have a couple of real computers, 2 ipads, and an iphone. My company uses 9 different apps for coordination. They’re working on putting it all on the company admin website....but until then I’ve found its easier to use my ipads when working. And even my iphone when I’m out and about. Took me a few times to get used to 15 but yeah, it’s working well for me.

None of that makes any sense whatsoever.

I do use Apple Music and I have unique playlist that mimic what I would play if I still had an Afternoon Drive radio show, I broke format a lot but I did manage to eventually marry my Program Director. (She still thinks my music is weird..)

Your English is fine and understandable. I just don’t get how an iPhone can behave the way you describe and especially how Apple couldn’t fix it. I’ve used Apple products from the Apple II days and they have the highest quality, the smoothest upgrades of OS, and the most trouble-free operation of any high-tech equipment I use. I used my iPhone 6 Plus for almost seven years and never had an OS upgrade issue. It finally just didn’t have the horsepower to run today’s apps.

It surprised the hell out of me. The tech said they could replace it for $399.

The problem had something to do with the connection to the battery. The battery couldn’t be charged either via charging cord or wirelessly.

Do I believe the phone could be fixed? Yes. Maybe the tech meant they couldn’t fix it at the Apple Store. At that point, it really didn’t matter to me. I need a phone that works and I’m no longer interested in having an iPhone.
