Woman gets jail time for close encounter with grizzly bear at Yellowstone National Park

A judge has sentenced an Illinois woman to four days in jail for not moving away while a grizzly bear with two cubs came dangerously close and bluff-charged her in Yellowstone National Park.

Samantha R. Dehring, 25, of Carol Stream, Illinois, pleaded guilty Wednesday to willfully remaining, approaching and photographing wildlife within 100 yards (91 meters).

In addition to sentencing Dehring to jail, U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark L. Carman in Mammoth Hot Springs banned her from Yellowstone for a year and ordered her to pay a $1,000 fine and $1,000 to a wildlife protection fund.

Dehring's attorney, Ethan Morris, didn't immediately return a phone message Thursday seeking comment.

She encountered the bear May 10 at Roaring Mountain, a hillside with numerous noisy steam vents called fumaroles.

Video of the encounter was widely shared on social media. On May 25, the park posted a photo of the woman along with a plea for tips that could help identify her.

She was stupid for approaching that close. Or remaining in the area. Jail time for this is insanity. Her lawyer should be disbarred. A $2000 fine is too much. There was no real damage done. Finally, imagine the resources that went to finding this woman. With the problems we have in this Country, are we really doing this? Who was the narc? That person should be castigated.

Harassing wildlife is one thing. She appears to be in an established parking/viewing area. If that’s willfully remaining the park is also liable. They’ll fill the jails if they arrest everyone in a national park who doesn’t retreat when within 100 yards of a bear, bison, elk, mountain goat etc

Finally, imagine the resources that went to finding this woman. With the problems we have in this Country, are we really doing this?

Maybe we should relocate the Park Rangers to Chicago.

I had a friend who was this stupid. A black bear came into the yard toward their cabin. Her sisters went inside, she stayed on the porch. Told me she wanted to pet it.

Later, I was walking my dog near a lumber store when one lady asked me if she could pet the dog. I said OK but instead she leaned down and kissed the dog on the face. Fortunately nothing happened.

Roger A. Caras in his delightful book, Dangerous to Man tells a story about a ranger at Yellowstone who punched a father who posed his children perched on a grizzly, and then turned in his ranger badge. The park service declined his resignation. Those were different times.

The problem comes if the bear actually does snarf the woman. Then the rangers have to find the bear and destroy it.

The bear gets the blame for the dumb human.
