The Unbelievable True Story of the Real Body Found in a California Funhouse
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Oct. 6, 2021 | Katie Dowd

Elmer McCurdy knew the end was nigh.

Trapped in an old barn, surrounded by sheriff’s deputies, he resigned himself to die. He popped open a purloined bottle of whiskey and took a pull. Might as well die as he lived, Elmer thought: stone-cold drunk.

Gunfire crackled through the Oklahoma air for an hour before deputies realized Elmer had stopped shooting back. They cautiously approached the barn and there, shot through the chest, lay the state’s most wanted outlaw. The Pawhuska undertaker declared him deceased on Oct. 7, 1911, and, after embalming the corpse, waited for relatives to come forward. Elmer was notorious; he figured it wouldn’t take long.

But death had only just begun its long, strange dance with Elmer McCurdy.

When I visited The Pike in Long Beach some 50 years ago it was on the downhill slide and consisted mostly of tattoo parlors, sailors and hookers since there was a Navy Base nearby.
Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in Seattle has three stiffs on display, Sylvester the petrified man being the most famous.

"At the wax museum, Elmer took up residence among the dummies, but perhaps there was something just a little … wrong about him."

I don't know why that sentence was so funny.

A good, though slightly long read. Worth the time.

If you read the Article until the very end it has a ‘Now You Know The Rest of The Story’ worthy of Paul Harvey. Hint: it is the origin of a well known cartoon villian.

I remember seeing a body of an “Old West Outlaw” at the local fair back in 1957. Don’t know if it was him or not.

I was living in Tulsa when he was buried. The local news papers carried a lot of it. He was buried with a pistol and maybe a rifle. To make sure the grave would no longer be disturbed the poured cement over the coffin.

Apparently Elmer wound up being the inspiration for the He Man character, Skeletor. The shows creator went to the scare house, where old Elmer was hanging, when he was nine years old. He said he knew right off that Elmer was a real body and he was never able to shake the memory...

This will be good news to all the businesses just across the Los Angeles County borders with other southern California counties - Ventura, Kern, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties.

By the way, your link didn't work, but this one which looks the same should:

My first few years of life were right next door to the Pike. We moved a few blocks away, but we still went often. You could swim in the Salt Water Plunge, Ride the Cyclone Racer, there was a double Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round where you could try for a brass ring and a free ride.

And then there was the Midway. If I remember correctly, Laff in the Dark featured a pair of large figures that moved and laughed maniacally—really creeped me out as a kid.

...he was taken to Guthrie, [Oklahoma] where the city council had voted to donate a final resting place... Hundreds came to watch as Elmer was taken in a horse-drawn hearse to Boot Hill Cemetery, home to other outlaws like Bill Doolin.

That cemetery is named Summit Hill, not Boot Hill. The latter is in Arizona.
