An international panel of experts from four renowned diabetes research centers, including UT Southwestern Medical Center, has reviewed current literature and is recommending a pivotal change in treatment of Type 2 diabetes to focus on obesity first and glucose control second.
The researchers state that dropping 15% or more of body weight can have a disease-modifying effect in Type 2 diabetes, an outcome that is unattainable by any other glucose-lowering intervention. The new focus would require updating current treatment guidelines and providing significant provider education, they note. The panel's recommendations are published in The Lancet and were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference.
The current approach to diabetes treatment relies on clinical studies from the 1980s, which found that lowering blood sugar results in fewer complications from the disease. These early results supported treating blood glucose as the key target, said Dr. Lingvay.
"The problem with this approach is that it doesn't address the core problem and does not offer an opportunity to reverse the disease," said Dr. Lingvay, who leads an active clinical research program in the Division of Endocrinology at UT Southwestern. "We propose using a proactive approach. Let's address the cause of the disease -- obesity."
According to the American Diabetes Association, Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease caused by obesity or by abnormalities in metabolism. More than 10% of the U.S. population has been diagnosed with diabetes, and 1.5 million more are diagnosed each year.

Apparently, that wasn’t helping people, since, well, forever.
would that be keto?
OMG!! Will the Lancet declare water is really wet too??
A “panel of experts” discover that Americans over the past few years have figured out how to solve the problem on their own, and now they want to get on board.
Just stop eating carbs and sugars.
HEELLOOOooooo.
Lancet will withdraw the article and apologize for body shaming.
R.I.P., Dr. Atkins. On this timeline, ivermectin for COVID should be endorsed by the medical establishment around the year 2047.
As a Type 2 diabetic who has seen or done so much of this, I find some of it interesting and some of it straying into ‘No shit, Sherlock’ territory. Yes, getting your weight down does have a direct correlation to your A1C levels.
Bump to read later
Wow.
It’s about time.
The natural health community has been advocating for this for decades.
And now the medical community has finally caught up with them, yet again.
Glucose is the most essential compound needed to feed the brain.
Maybe the switch to high fructose corn syrup is part of the plot!?!
Anyway, I thought it was pretty common knowledge that weight loss and diet improved DT2 blood measurements. But I could be wrong. Can’t remember. Need more glucose.
More than 10% of the U.S. population has been diagnosed with diabetes.

That’s a disturbing statistic. But if one looks at the foods available in the grocery store it is perhaps not surprising. The local supermarket I go to has an entire aisle devoted to frozen pizzas, hot pockets, and other hi carb frozen microwaveable foods. Then there is a full aisle of sodas; truly empty calories. And yet another aisle of frozen deserts lice ice cream and popsicles. And another of chips, crackers, and cookies.
Do?....What’s the plan for controlling obesity? Not more of the same failure producing strategies, I hope!
Keto would be good.
The “10%” number is crazy to read, I agree.
That is an incredibly large number of people.
I dont care how much sugar you put in it. No, just no.
LOL! That wouldn’t be a big seller.
People I know that have had bariatric surgery are still obese, just more unhealthy. The pattern seems to be a short term weight loss, but within a few years they are as heavier than ever. One person I used to work with had to quit and go on disability because after the surgery none of the meds to treat his bipolar condition worked anymore, even at max dosage.
The real cure is self control and getting rid of processed foods. A cutting out carbs and replacing them with foods high fat and fiber helps with satiety too.
It’s worse than that, because being Diabetic is just part of a continuum or the end state of a series of diseases.
“Chronic insulin resistance is the cause of ‘Metabolic Syndrome’: obesity, abdominal fat storage, high triglycerides, low HDL or “good” cholesterol, and elevated glucose with eventual type 2 diabetes (1 in 12 humans on earth currently have full blown type 2 diabetes, while 35% of adults and 50% of older adults have Metabolic Syndrome, or pre-diabetes).”
