Please Explain. Exactly Why Do We Have a Shipping Crisis?
I have never been in a union. I am pro worker - but that doesn’t make a person pro union you boob.
Well that is the point of protective tariffs High enough and then everything is "economically feasible" made in the USA instead of off shored.
“We are so screwed.”
Don’t get too frightened yet. We have a tremendous agriculture industry and we can feed a lot of people. They can’t feed what they have now. They have been procuring land for years and failed in its use as they can’t stay with the population increases. I believe this is what they are looking at in Taiwan as around 24% of that land is agriculture, and would be a big boost to the Chinese economy. Especially if they don’t have to pay a price for it in actual yen.

The Chinese withholding goods is a form of a tariff.
The Chinese are mercantilists, the ultimate trade terrorists. So are they isolationists too????
They build a freeway nearby.
30+ years of lawsuits! After all the lawsuits were finally dismissed, it took only about two years to physically build it.
Unless we rein in the lawyers, no tariffs would help.
Agreed. We need them across the board to keep suppliers from just shifting countries and relabeling.
I'm fine with higher tariffs on certain countries like China, especially when they are agressive and have major ideaological differences. But country specific tariffs are not sufficient by themselves.
I agree as to the hair on fire comment moov.
I was actually involved in the shipping business. I chartered many a cargo and many a ship up to a few Panamaxes. Was also exposed to a lot of container biz.
The article gets to the heart of what is going on and why.
On some things ZH is spot on. On others they are a tad loony and a very critical eye is needed.
In this article, the info and analysis is sound.
“...looking at in Taiwan as around 24% of that land is agriculture...”
I’ve always thought of Taiwan as one large factory. But looking at Google map of Taiwan...you’re right. Lots of farmland!
Maybe the UK, maybe not...we’ll see if they actually ‘fix’ their problem. It sure seems they’re in no hurry.
But the talk is about GLOBAL supply chains, not the lack of Polish truck drivers.
Makes sense...and yea, stores can use surpluses in one product to cover shortfalls in other products...but who knows?
Yes, across the board tariffs. Not country by country.
Well, if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck…
I am pro American - workers and CEOs, both. I think Trump was, too. We all live here. Your neighbor needs a job, too, and it’s not just cutting your grass. Buy American!
That said, Unions priced themselves out of work, in this country. Now, they’re in Government, where they don’t even have to pretend to work. The Free Market is the American way, and labor needs to operate that way, too.
China has attacked all Americans with election interference and this virus.
This goes back to the beginnings of the Just In Time production system. Now there is noplace for the ships cargoes to be placed while other cargoes are loaded, as the warehouses and storage lots are covered in condom(iniums)s now. The limited number of frames to carry the containers, the limited hours drivers are allowed to work, the limits on longshoremen’s operating hours are all contributing factors.
In effect, we are in the midst of a perfect storm of shipping shortfalls due to short-sightedness and intentional neglect. Then there is the greed and need for micro-managing of the left.
I agree with you.
Pop Quiz: How many US workers are in a union?
Regarding containers weight when empty: Remember that space on a cargo vessel costs money, so partial loads are unlikely.
An empty TEU weighs about 3 tons, a full one about 25 tons.
While the TEU is not itself a measure of mass, some conclusions can be drawn about the maximum mass that a TEU can represent. The maximum gross mass for a 20-foot (6.1 m) dry cargo container is 24,000 kilograms (53,000 lb).[7] Subtracting the tare mass of the container itself, the maximum amount of cargo per TEU is reduced to approximately 21,600 kilograms (47,600 lb).[7]
True, but a 20 foot container can only hold an average of 8 tons of cargo on the largest of cargo ships. If they were all loaded to capacity, the ship would sink.
