A heartless neonatal ICU nurse has been fired for mocking a newborn with a birth defect by posting photos of the sick infant on social media and writing 'your intestines posed to be inside not outside baby'.
Sierra Samuels, who had worked as a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami since 2016, was fired Thursday following the outcome of a weeks-long investigation into a patient privacy breach, reported CBS Miami.
Samuels had posted two photos on her Instagram of a baby in her care who had been born with a condition causing its intestines to be outside of its body.

HIPAA is drilled into all hospital nurses. There is no excuse for what she did. Bringing awareness of this medical problem does no service to anyone, its not like AIDS in which education will help prevent illness. She is very stupid, and needs to lose her license and go to jail.

I havent read all the details on Joan Rivers but it seems she died of malpractice...part of which happened during “selfie time”

Will never forget late on night early morn I was waiting to fly out of there after dropping off our Pt and the meat wagon brought in a “brother” on a gurney. Some one had poured Drano in his mouth.
Seen a lot of injuries and that one was pretty nasty.

They can be lectured about HIPAA until the cows come home, it will still be hard to overcome a cultural mindset that exploits can be posted (very easily) on social media for a brief moment of self-glorification.
I think the “posed’ was the give away.
Stupid and she shouldn’t have posted the photo. Do we really know she is “heartless” or a bad nurse? Did she really “mock” the baby?
Sometimes I just like to see the other side when everyone is piling on.

That depends on where she went to school and what the credentialing requirements were.
I know of one hospital where the nursing school grads are only able to work at that hospital. If they want to work elsewhere they have to complete more training. I imagine that is very common these days.
As far as her language on her personal Instagram account, I take it as her speaking to her friends in her personal “black” voice. The voice of tha Hood ‘n all dat.
I expect she is very proficient with her professional “white” voice that she uses at work and select other places/times.
I hadn’t known it until a couple of weeks ago but the “two voices” thing is real.
As far as the picture and her captioning of it, I wonder if she was “speaking” more out of empathy for the child than any thought of malice?

I was virtue signaled at all last year that she’s a hero. There are even lawn signs still admonishing me that this is so.
We who deal with daily tragedies in our hospitals DO indulge in humor to break the mood - but this really cannot co-exist with TikTok or Facebook.
