2022 Ford Explorer To Gain Optional Auto Start/Stop Removal
Ford Authority ^ | September 23, 2021 8:17 am | Brett Foote

As Ford Authority reported back in August, FoMoCo recently gave 2021 Ford F-150 buyers the option to remove the auto start-stop feature from their pickups through the end of the year, and those that choose to do so will get a $50 credit and perhaps take delivery a little sooner, due to supply constraints. Now, sources familiar with the 2022 Ford Explorer launch are telling Ford Authority that auto stop-start will become an option on the 2022 Explorer as well.

The auto stop-start feature will be an option on Base, XLT, Timberline, and Limited trims for 2022. Shoppers eyeing Limited Hybrid, King Ranch, Platinum, Platinum Hybrid, and ST models will not get this choice, because the change applies only to models equipped with Ford’s 2.3L EcoBoost I-4. This change will be reflected in Explorer production beginning in late September.

As is the case with the 2021 F-150, those that choose to opt-out of auto stop-start will receive a $50 credit for their troubles.

“Something seemed odd so I rolled down my window to listen...it was this damn feature stopping the other vehicles DIESEL engine (it was a MBz). I thought how ridiculosis it is to start-stop a diesel engine with glow-plugs an a 22:1 compression ratio.”

Agree, insane. You can idle a diesel all day and burn something like one gallon of fuel.

I think that what bothers me most is that the dash interface is really just a stupid Android phone. There are some interesting new technologies, like electrical power steering, but I am navigating a stupid Android touchscreen to change radio stations. I could talk to it, I suppose, but I have no desire to.

It is if they design it because they can, not because they should.

Yes Subaru ECMs can be programmed.

“The most wear on the engine is during start up.”

Only on initial startup when cold and oil has dripped off parts

The new stop-start feature does not hurt the engine as it is already hot and parts are coated in oil

“That is definitely true and even more so with today’s tight tolerance overhead cam engines. No oil where it needs to get until the engine is started.”

Start up engine wear is only on cold engines with oil that has dripped off critical parts.

Multiple engineering studies on these stop start engines show no engine wear because the engine is hot and oil is still on critical parts.

Stupidest thing that was ever put on a car to begin with since... since Chrysler had a record player back in '57 or whenever.

Someday that starter will fail, especially after all the extra use it's going to get at every stop light.

Now that's a good rant. :-)

You might want to find a Subaru forum that discusses your specific model and year. You may find that there's a discussion about how to hack your ecu to turn off collision avoidance. That's how I turned off auto-start on my car and turned on a bunch of stuff I wanted but didn't pay for (lane assist, auto brights and a couple of others). It was easy to do with a cheap code reader and a cheap piece of software. I tend to like the technology.

Collision avoidance saved my ass one day. I was in my nice new car about a month after a deer had totaled my previous car. I was driving along at night minding my own business and suddenly, without warning, the car braked to a complete stop. I looked up and saw a deer standing in the middle of the road not more than ten feet directly in front of the car. The system braked to a stop before I had time to even see the deer, much less apply the brakes. My brand new car certainly would have been totaled and my wife and I may have been injured. Yes, there have been a few false positives that startled me, but I'll take those in return for the true positives. :-)

Cruise Control is good. But something I found way back when it was first being added was that I could actually get better mileage with the foot feed. Cruise Control tends to try and “jack rabbit” accelerate when I can instead gently accelerate manually.

Back when they first came out this was even more pronounced because they would wait too long to accelerate back up to speed. So it was an “all on or all off” situation. the gap between the two was too much.

When I could instead manually “float” the throttle and maintain a steadier speed with just slight push rather than “all on” and actually save more fuel. I even tried to tune CC on different cars for years and still could not beat what I could do with the foot feed.

The fourth sentence of your article is” “On average, commuters waste 54 hours a year in traffic. That number is expected to rise in the future. That’s roughly $1,010 a year that the average person is using on fuel that’s wasted idling.”

That is so wrong that I read no farther. The 54 hours may be reasonable. That would be roughly 8 minutes per one way commute every working day. That seem a bit high to me, but possible.

The $1,010 cost for that is not reasonable. A thousand bucks for 50 hours works out to about $20 per hour. That would be about 7 gallons of gasoline. That’s at least at ten times more than the actual cost of idling, which is well under a gallon per hour.

wonder what the MTBF is now on starter solenoids and starters with all that starting and stopping?

Plus the alternator has an increased load on the engine because it has to top off the battery again because of the juice used to start it. So the on/off system isn’t actually saving much of anything at all in the long run.

I have older cars and wasn’t aware that such a feature existed. So that’s what’s going on when I hear engines starting at traffic lights. On countless occasions I have been stuck in traffic and going 0 mph. The engine goes off then too? It shuts down every time traffic comes to a halt? I don’t believe I would like that, along with a lot of other automated features I have heard about. Give me a car with AC, power windows, and a decent radio, and I’m good to go.

I have cruise control on my F250, and I like it for level roads with light traffic. (During the early COVID hysteria, I once made it all the way through Phoenix at midday with the cruise at 70.) Going up any sort of hill, though, cruise control will kick the transmission down and rev the motor way up, trying to maintain the set speed. I agree that you can drive more smoothly with your foot, but it’s nice to be able to move your right leg around from time to time on long drives.

Your description of the early cruise controls reminds me of the way my mother used to drive, treating the gas pedal as an on-off switch. Maddening to passengers.

That would be roughly 8 minutes per one way commute every working day.

In every major city, in the US, where people commute from the suburbs into the city, 8 minutes would be heaven. It's more like 20 minutes on average.

The freeways in L.A., and NYC, are even longer.

Have no clue where you live, unless it is Norway. Which if it is, then I can see why you don't buy the numbers listed in the article.

I have a 2013 Impreza. 5 speed. Funny thing is that “pzev” means that with a proper operating catalytic system the car has zero emissions at idle (and without revving it)

The Subaru idle stop function is pretty worthless.

As far as someone’s concern over engine wear, the engine isn’t the problem.. the starters need replacing quite often.

If these companies switched to air starters we wouldn’t have this problem. And if they switched to belt mounted electric assist alternators we wouldn’t even be aware of it starting.

But again, I’m 5 speed. I’m not part of that circus.

“collision avoidance idiocy”

We have the collision avoidance system in the F150 but it only lights up the dash in Defcon 1 flashing RED and makes a loud beeping...no brake action, thank goodness. First time it did it...had to change my underwear. Now I just ignore it. It’s idea of “too close” is soi boi compared to my idea of “too close”.

As for the back up camera...I use it, but rely on backing with the side view mirrors more often than not.

Speaking of Subaru Forrester...the neighbor bought one and loves it. He just bought the next size down Subaru SUV...and I’ll be walking over today to look at it.

“...it is not good for you engine to stop and re-start every time your vehicle stops.”

Exactly! That’s a lot of excessive wear.
