Ancient Footprints Push Back Date of Human Arrival in the Americas
The New York Times ^ | 23 Sept 2021 | Carl Zimmer

Human footprints found in New Mexico are about 23,000 years old, a study reported, suggesting that people may have arrived long before the Ice Age’s glaciers melted.

Ancient human footprints preserved in the ground across the White Sands National Park in New Mexico are astonishingly old, scientists reported on Thursday, dating back about 23,000 years to the Ice Age.

The results, if they hold up to scrutiny, would rejuvenate the scientific debate about how humans first spread across the Americas, implying that they did so at a time when massive glaciers covered much of their path.

Researchers who have argued for such an early arrival hailed the new study as firm proof.

“I think this is probably the biggest discovery about the peopling of America in a hundred years,” said Ciprian Ardelean, an archaeologist at Autonomous University of Zacatecas in Mexico who was not involved in the work. “I don’t know what gods they prayed to, but this is a dream find.”

For decades, many archaeologists have maintained that humans spread across North and South America only at the end of the last ice age. They pointed to the oldest known tools, including spear tips, scrapers and needles, dating back about 13,000 years. The technology was known as Clovis, named for the town of Clovis, N.M., where some of these first instruments came to light.

The age of the Clovis tools lined up neatly with the retreat of the glaciers. That alignment bolstered a scenario in which Siberian hunter-gatherers moved into Alaska during the Ice Age, where they lived for generations until ice-free corridors opened and allowed them to expand southward.

Amen. Native Americans no more “indigenous” than recently departed Chief Wahoo.

A bulldozer digging a road here uncovered a starmap oriented to a North star .. It was carved into a ledge six feet deep. The starmap was calculated by north star & star positions as being carved in ~25,000 B.C. It has 9 dots carved into the circle..9 planets?

Thanks-very interesting-I’ve always been on the side of archaeologists who believe that people have been coming to the Americas since there was a way to get here-by hugging the coast on water, or walking over/around glaciers on land near a coast-way, way before a mere 13,000 years ago. Humans are always looking for new resources, and they like new and interesting stuff-if exploration and trade makes the world go round now, it stands to reason that has always been the way it was 20, 30, 40 or how ever many 1000’s of years they are talking about...

George Catlin says the Mandans had brown, Hazel, and BLUE EYES.

His theory was that in 1170 AD, Prince Madoc left Wales and went to the Americas.

They act like that’s old. The oldest homoerectus skull unearthed is 2 million years old. How is it we can only trace history back 5,000 years?

Written history began with Sumerian cuneiform that long ago. Cave art goes back much farther.

While simultaneously cover up, hiding, discrediting finds that date to 130,000 years in California and sites that go back to 280,000 years in South America ; and then running out of the profession and ruining the archeologist who unearthed them.

Maybe they can figure out who the Indians stole this land from.

Everyone knows is was the Irish who initially habited these lands. One look at Kennewick Man and you know he's an Irishman who got lost on the way home from the pub.

We did not come fleeing a famine (fake news) we never left. We demand restitution and reparations. In addition we demand casinos and free whisky.

The Indian Hindus would very much disagree with that statement.

Modern Tribes would force either their destruction or re-interment.

In the course of my seven decades, I cannot think of one area of the Natural Sciences that has not had a major upset / revelation. Properly done, a researcher probes and looks for gaps or conclusions supported more by opinion than by facts. I think one of the most perceptive comments on this subject came from Arthur C Clarke as one of his "Three Laws";

1) When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2) The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3) Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Thanks for this post. I’ve said in the past that I find the Berengia Theory a bit weak. Native Americans are a very old group and this will add some depth to that evidence.
