An “underwater recovery team” has joined the search for Gabby Petito’s boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, in a 25,000-acre Florida reserve, according to reports.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office dive crew arrived at the Carlton Reserve on Wednesday to look for Laundrie, a person of interest in Petito’s death in Wyoming.
The Sheriff’s Underwater Recovery Force, or SURF, is a team of “highly trained underwater specialists,” the sheriff’s website says.
“Area resources are looking at large bodies of water, including dive teams, boats, and sonar equipment,” North Port police spokesman Josh Taylor said. “At this time, this does not mean anything has been found. It’s part of the overall search process.”

So parents said he was in that area?
Who decides when enough money has been spent in pursuit of a ‘Person of Interest’? The local Police Chief?
Mayor or Governor? Every expenditure has a ceiling, even if just for that fiscal year.
He’s sipping pina coladas in El Salvador.
Haitians can magically cross water from Haiti to Texas, so maybe Laundrie has the same powers.
The guy is probably long gone, sipping a beer and laughing at all of this effort.
I haven’t followed this story closely. Do they think the boyfriend is dead, or in hiding? If dead, do they suspect suicide, or something else?
They should have been watching him. Weren’t like tons of journalists at his house. Did they see him leave? I hope his parents are charged. They knew.
Under water...best place for him!
Amazing how much money our government can spend on horseMitt like this...
You are right. His enabling parents sent him somewhere. They will never find his body.
Everyone wants to look busy and participate, I guess it probably passes as training in the long run. But a big waste of taxpayer dollars.
It’s nice to have a blank checkbook...
Sounds like murder suicide.
I’m wondering, could this million dollar search effort, putting people at risk, have been avoided?
Having stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, perhaps they could have put surveillance on this prime suspect for a few days at much less cost?
Perhaps, but if so, not for long. The law will be watching all transfers from any account associated with him, the parents, or his lawyer. I don't see how he can long-term support himself abroad without living deeply in the shadows. He doesn't seem like a self-supporting go-getter.
A trail cam alleges to have spotted him 500 miles away in the panhandle area.
In some gator's belly, fatally bitten by a water moccasin, or squeezed to death by some python would be even better.
I used to do this kind of diving. It’s an absolute waste of time unless you have defined target areas. Divers cannot sweep large areas, but they can do intensive searches of small areas.
Are the parents really telling the truth about Brian going to that swamp. If it’s a lie the Laundrie family needs to reimburse the taxpayers for the cost of this search.
Sending in diving teams isn’t cheap. Also I don’t think Brian offed himself, but I won’t complain if he did.

“They are motivated and they are hungry to find Brian Laundrie.”
Search continues right now at the reserve. Dive teams are still on site — we haven’t seen them come out.
