PULLMAN, Wash. -- The United Airlines plane transporting the USC football team to Pullman ahead of their matchup against WSU was seen tipped on its back wheels while parked on the runway.

It was reported that almost half the team was still on board the plane when this happened.

United Airlines sent a statement regarding the incident to KHQ:

"United flight 2509 flying from Los Angeles, California to Lewiston, Idaho landed without incident. Due to a shift in weight and balance during the offloading process, the tail of the aircraft tipped backward. No injuries were reported among our customers, crew or ground personnel. The return flight will depart on a different aircraft as originally planned."

Somebody not watching CG.

Back during the Vietnam war, a Sikorsky CH-53 took off with a load of pallets full of C-Rations. The CH-53 has roller tracks in the deck to allow easy off loading or air-drops.

In this instance, the helo was not full of pallets (IIRC, a ful load was 6+ pallets), so they were rolled to the front and a single cargo strap was put behind the last pallet to keep them to the front. This was done to allow quicker off-loading if the LZ was taking fire. Just release that cargo strap and roll the pallets out the ramp as the CH-53 taxied down the dirt strip.

After takeoff, the ramp was raised and the door over the ramp was closed. On climb-out, the cargo strap let go and all the pallets rolled aft, wedging that door closed. The ramp will not open if the door is not raised. Now the helo is grossly Aft CG!. The pilots shoved full forward cyclic, then rolled the trim wheels Full Forward. They are flying around in circles over DaNang Bay in an extreme nose high attitude.

Meanwhile, back in the 25 foot long cargo compartment, the crew chief and door gunner grab an E-tool to cut the banding on the pallets, knock out any remaining side windows and start throwing cases of C's (25 lbs each) overboard as fast as they can.

There was a happy ending. Eventually, CG was restored to normal, the flight crew returned to base for several "cold ones" and clean skivvies, and there were many, many happy Vietnamese fishermen who made a "windfall" catch of C-Ration Fish that day.

“You seem to be a self proclaimed authority on everything. In this case you dont know what your talking about as in many others.”

Duh!

I offered no ‘expert’ information. Only stated my personal experience. You were the one that offered ‘expert’ advice.

"it wasn’t “mere passengers” in the tail, but 200-420 pound linemen and backs. And no luggage up front."

USC said only fat coaches and staff remained on board.

“So, Fauci calculated the weight and balance sheet?”

It was fine when they took off.

That is a 737-900, a very long 737. The proper procedure is to install a tail post, before offloading. It is usually done immediately after the wheels are chocked. I imagine the ground handling crew at that airport was unfamiliar with the -900. The tail post fits into the aft jack point location at the rear of the aircraft. The cabin doors open outward, so maybe the 1L door was damaged on the boarding stairs also.

I’m thinking that they just count “heads” when doing weight and balance.. No allowance for foot-ball-player types.

They will have to spread the Samoans throughout the plane from the front to the back!

"Me thinks the load master screwed up"

(Heard before the plane tipped)"Anybody can do it, come-on, what do you have to know to unload an airplane for goodness sake".

They’ve been told how many times that the fat players sit up towards the front. Sheesh! You would think they had gotten the memo by now!

"Plane carrying USC football team to Pullman tips onto back wheels on runway"

I guess that means its "back wheels" weren't on the ground until this happened.

Yes, there can be slow leak decompressions that no one notices, which is why they have those alarm systems. Obviously, in an explosive decompression, it’s pretty obvious what is happening. In my friend’s case, they were in the middle of cabin service and the masks suddenly dropped. They all looked around at each other like, “WTF?” (LOL... not what our training told us to do, but nonetheless...) and a few seconds later, announcement from the cockpit to put the masks on, sit down and hold on. She ended up under the legs of some passengers when they went into the nosedive because there were no open seats and her jumpsuit was too far away. (This is why there are always extra masks in each row—for babies, aisle wanderers, and flight attendants.)
