Weekly Garden Thread - September 18-24, 2021
September 18, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 09/18/2021 5:23:47 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Which plants will I bring inside to overwinter?

Perfect meme. I have a spring chores list and a fall one and the fall one is always longer. I have saved more seed this year than ever before. Just have some pepper plants, broccoli, Chinese long beans, pickles, some herbs and those Ukrainian tomato plants still green and still with ripening and green tomatoes. Plus our raspberry bushes are still growing new berries. I started new romaine lettuce and radishes in a big long rectangular planter. And our new lavender plants we put in this spring have set flowers twice. No fall color here yet in west Michigan. The weather has been fantastic. Taking another walk around the local botanic gardens this morning. My exercise for today. I took my dehydrator downstairs already after 3 batches tomatoes typically I can sauce first, then dehydrate with what is left. But I am still getting more tomatoes so I am using the oven now have done 2 cookie sheets of halved San Romano and Sabre tomatoes. Spoon out any seeds and toss with olive oil and salt and pepper. I set at 300 or 2 or 3 hours. Love them coarsely chopped and added to pasta, a little butter, a chunk of frozen basil or fresh, dome heavy cream and some parmesan cheese. Stir on very low heat until you have a thick pinkish sauce, maybe 1 or 2 minutes.

I need those cheap glasses for close work, too. The surgery is truly unbelievable. I could barely see out of one eye and it was effecting my driving. The color difference is spectacular. COLOR me happy!!

Busy as usual! :)

I cleaned out a large closet that we have in the Family Room - I plan on moving lesser-used appliances there so I have more room in the Pantry off the Dining Room to hold my canned goods.

Can’t wait to be finished so I can show you all how packed our larder will be for the winter. It’s SO much work, but very rewarding. With every lid that ‘PINGS’ I’m stickin’ it to Da Man, LOL!

Greeneyes! One of our ‘customers’ thinks we should change your intro. :)

“Which plants will I bring inside to overwinter?”

I need to make room for five Rosemary plants and a couple of ‘new to me’ Geraniums! ;)

No. Brussels was a nightmare. If you are disabled or have a family member who is disabled avoid that city like the plague. Worst place I've ever seen for handicapped access. So we were limited to where we could go and a lot of my pictures were taken during walks I did while my wife was napping. We did a private 90 minute electric rickshaw tour so she got to see most of the major sights but it was next to impossible to push her around. Not a big loss though, I still have a pretty decent supply on hand.

Absinthe? Isn’t that the stuff Edgar Allen Poe was doped up on, when writing his fantastical tales? ;)

Does their B&B breakfast include hash browns?? :)

Which reminds me.... potato die back....I need to screen a couple of 10 gallon fabric bags for potatoes today! (Still have one with growing plants!)

Local report:

Trifle and Stupice tomatoes still pushing out fruit, Jimmy Nardellos, Allepo, and Baklouti peppers plants are slowing down; Now 5- 6 foot Heavy Hitter Okra are still producing. 2 japanese cucumber are still hanging on the vines. (Most have succumbed to virus wilt I am afraid!)

Figs in 5 gallon pots are ripening! Varieties: Nero 600, Bordissot Griese, Black Madeira, Marseille Black, Maltese Beauty, Rosa Esmeralda, Olympian, and Florea have all produced fruit this year! (All two and three year trees grown from cuttings!) I even have some fruit on fig cuttings that I started this year (Red Lebanese Bekka valley and Italian 258!) I have several split figs on an Unknown (uncertain variety) Rimada which I may try to use in fig preserves! (I even have an in ground Chicago hardy with a ripe fig!) (I have a lousy camera but will try to see if I can get pictures!)

Good! I hate when things get too wordy.

Though I was a big fan of Wordy Woodpecker when I was a kid.

Got time for a Garden Tour? Sure you do! Misc. pictures over the past few weeks...

My 'President Nixon' tomato ripened up nicely. Then, I ate it! I also have a potato that looks like a duck! 😉

The last of the Mount Royal Plums that Beau picked for me. Made the first batch into Pear Butter - these I froze to use in a 'crumble' later.

Nasturtium still going strong!

Purple Kale.

Fremont was digging by the edge of my rose garden, so I went to investigate. Mr. & Mrs. Toad have set up residence! I put a bucket over the hole so the dogs couldn't dig, but the toads could still get out at night to eat bugs and worms.

How could this NOT be good for you? Veggies I'm cooking down to make into V-8 Juice.

'Habanada' Peppers. Habanero type without the heat. Going to become 'Cowboy Candy' when enough of them are ripe.

Green Kale ('Prism' I think?) and two HUGE red peppers. Got a free pack of seeds with an order from Jung's. These are 'Big Red' and good golly, ARE they! Growing them again next year; there are still quite a few out in the garden. They are really thick skinned, so will be great for stews and stir fries.

A small portion of the winter squashes from The Big Garden. I left all of the Pie Pumpkins in there to deal with later - buying time until our first freeze! These are Jarandale and Lakota, also have Spaghetti squash and Honeynut.

Taters! Kennebec and Red Norland. Mom and I dug two rows on Thursday. One row to go, which are the German Butterball potatoes.
